For $13K this kid has probably more fun then his Malibu neighbor with his $180K Porsche GT3 RS.

Considering the lessons learned from building a car and the fun factor, looks like a steal to me.

Surely fun, but 13k is a lot of money, especially if you do all the work yourself so its all parts. Wisely spent? Guess we're each the judge on that one. Kid still lives at home, and its still a gem 1 RX7 that looks like crap. FWIW if someone said the same thing about the money I've sunk into my MBs I'd be kind of sad (financially thinking about it) but not destroyed (sentimentally).

I was just looking at what I poured in my 20 year old car in the last three years...it's not 13K yet.

I figure when I finish my om606, 722.6 swap I'll have a few thousand into it. My car will still look like it does and it will be a blast to drive.

I'd say he did a great job and who says your car has to shine and look nice to be great.

It's difficult for me to wrap my mind around the whole rat rod thing, but in general I like it.

This kid could have wasted his time playing video games or hanging around an OSW protest, but he put his time into something different. If he REALLY DID build the car himself, then I expect he learned alot. The fact that he has $13K in it, makes me think that he didn't really build it himself. If he did, he needs to learn about salvage yards.

I hope he doesn't expect to attract girls with this car......

But maybe that is good thing;...he gets to do what he wants, without someone snuffing the life out of him.

This is great!! Thanks for the posting this.

Reminds me of one of my all-time favorite past cars: my '79 RX-7 (and one of the first 500 built).

I only wish he had a rotary engine under the hood-- but kudos to all his effort and ingenuity!

It's not my cup of tea, but I'm not going to judge. Plus, he's young, he seems to be happy, and he appears to have prioritized roadability, which is important. How many kids buy a car that needs lots of work but dump money into flashy wheels, paint and tint, but it's just a tired old mayhem-laden wreck (leaving fluid tracks) with everything that really matters.

And as Larry points out, he's actually done something useful with his spare time. I know too many people in that generation (and the one prior) whose useful, transferable and relatable skills end when they unplug from the PS2/Wii/etc. The kid also seems to be personable and to have a grasp of the English language.

The car is essentially a big middle finger to the entire tuner crowd and those RX-7 owners that get butt hurt when you swap out the rotary for something that is better.

Every car scene has them, we have them here. When I had a delorean and parted it out I had people condemn me and call me a delorean killer. Then those people would PM me asking for parts, which I did sell them for 2x the markup I asked.
