Bovine Colostrum, Is Anyone Using It And If So What Were The Results?

What it is:
Colostrum is the thin yellowish fluid produced during the first few milkings of a mammal after she has given birth. It is the carrier of the immunities that are transferred from mother to infant, and one of the reasons breast feeding is so important to the health of children. Colostrum contains an abundance of nutrients, including growth factors, lipidic and glucidic factors, oligosaccharides, antimicrobials, cytokines and nucleoside. It is rich in immunoglobulins which are certain types of protein involved in promoting the immune system and fighting germs.

Bovine colostrum is identical in molecular structure to the colostrum of humans.

My 80 something Father had Carpel Tunnel issues and was able to close His Hands and make a Fist.
His Girl Friend got Him to take Bovine Colostrum supplied by someone She knows that has some Dairy Cows. After Several Months He was able to close his Hands normally.
He also claims it helped with his Arthritis.

On the Internet they sell Liquids, Powders, Capsules and even Sprays made from the stuff.

On Amazon I have been reading Customer Reviews of the Stuff some said that they had been using it for as much as 2 years and had more energy and got sick less and when they did get sick it was not as bad and of a shorter duration.

Unfortunately over 1/2 of the Positive Reviews repeated what it was used for and did not actually give if it helped them or not?

So I am hoping someone here has some personal experience or knows someone that has.

A couple of the football teams over here used it a few years ago as a supplement. They saw very good results

Yeah I've used it. I've bucket fed a few newborn calves with it in my life. Even one or two feedings of it will give the calf immunity and health that it has no other way of getting.

Remarkable as it is, I wouldn't pay big bucks for any. Go get some from the feed store. It is a powder you mix with warm water.

Moo!

Diesel911, if your 80something father has a girl friend, he probably doesn't need to worry about making a fist anymore.

I've been reading about colostrum supplementation too. Pretty interesting anecdotal information. I know from years of experience the difference in health and strength between dam raised goats, sheep, cattle and horses and those that are bottle fed milk replacers. Whether that translates to benefit human adults is another matter.

Hey Larry, did you know that when calves suckle, it raises a flap in their throat that directs liquid past the rumen to the reticulum where the nutrients can be properly digested. That's why it is important to use a nipple when bottle or bucket feeding.

Learn something new everyday. I knew the nipple on the bucket is necessary, but I didn't know exactly why. With Bovines being Ruminants though, it makes all the sense in the world.

Thanks for the responses.

Concerning the use in Sports there is several articles where they tested Colostrum against a control group using Whey Protein.

What I got from the article was that it did not directly improve performance but it decreased the recovery time after exertion.
The quicker recovery time allowed them to train harder and the harder training increased their performance.

In the Customer Reviews on amazon some said they felt more energetic and as I said in the first post did not get sick as much and/or their sickness was shorter and not as bad.

People also use the stuff on their ailing Cats and Dogs.

That stuff is meant to be mixed with warm water and bottle fed to orphaned calves. So, assuming it's pure colostrum powder as the human supplements supposedly are, all things being equal I'd just take a similar amount. You could put it in gelatin caps or mix it with warm water or stir it up into cottage cheese or yogurt or something.
It's a milk product, not medicine. I doubt you'd have any issues if you took the whole package, other than a tidy amount of weight gain.

Some of the articles I read pretty much said you could take a lot with no issues. However, they did not indicate if it was the pure stuff or what is commonly sold for People.

If for some reason you reconstituted more then you need does it need to be refrigerated?

I am asking this because the one My Father gets is shipped cold overnight.
I saw some Colostrum on Amazon that was a liquid and had to be kept cold and shipped fast.

On Amazon there were a few people that complained of loose Bowels and or gas/bloating from normal doses.

These people were Lactose intolerant. The one Person believed the company He bought from had changed the formula as He had be using it for over 1 year.

The thought was that some companies are not selling the Pure stuff but stuff that also has regular Milk in it.
