Ron, ordinarily I defend your posts and I support your right to your beliefs but in no way can this post be considered as anything but hateful. What possible correlation can this posting of a list of people killed have to do with the original topic? Shouldn't you also post the list of innocent civilians killed by suicide bombers since they are recognized as "heroes" for their cause? Do you really condone their actions?

Lordie, I wish I'd never have posted this topic.
Anyway, Ya wanna give those guys an AWARD (not a medal) and a "feel good" ribbon, go ahead but don't ever claim it is more important or of a higher value than one earned by putting your butt on the line. » Medals American Valor

"The Bronze Star is awarded for bravery, acts of merit or meritorious service. When awarded for bravery, it is the fourth-highest combat award of the U.S. Armed Forces and the ninth-highest military award (including both combat and non-combat awards) in the order of precedence of U.S. military decorations."

Drones are a killing tool. yes? Seems evryone is in agreement that the bad guys should be stopped-myself included. It also would seem that some people scroll through a list such as the one provided, and seem to say "Oh well". No, I do not condone, or support the fanatics who strap c-4 to themselves and blow up innocent people for their cause. However, IMHO, issuing medals to the individuals who operate the joy sticks on the drone machines is feeding the fire for the fanatics. Thats where I am coming from. Sorry if you mis-read me, or if I have offended you in any way.

Although I'm a little late to the discussion I'd like to add two things which might add perspective.
My grandfather was a captian in the Army during Korea. He built power plants and helped control the power systems behind the lines. (I have a nice metal plaque he got for building a power plant on Corregidor) Anyway, he never got close to the lines during any part of the conflict. His unit was awarded the bronze star for their service in a certain action. He never put it on his uniform and flatly refused to list it at any point after then. It has always remained in it's case, tucked in the back of his nightstand. His reasoning was that he had no part in earning it, so he didn't deserve to wear it or accept anything that might come with it. Similarly, in the second world war the 101st Airborne was given a presidential citation for their actions on D-day. Many new recruits were hesitent to wear it because they either hadn't been in action that day or were not even part of the unit at the time, even though they had been entitled to wear it. I don't know what kind of award/medal they are going to end up giving these guys in the future. But I can only hope that they will take the stand of "if I didn't earn it, then I won't wear it".

Your Grandfather was obviously an honorable man. Unit citations are different from the individual citation that was discussed in the original post. The original post talked about individual medals for drone pilots. The debate has been about whether or not they deserve combat citations, since they are not exposed to enemy fire. I was in an Air Defense Artillery unit that had a Presidential Unit Citation with two Oak Leaves. The unit was completely wiped out at Subic Bay during WWII along with other honorable situations. The only time I ever wore it was after an azz chewing by a Captain who was about to be sitting on a promotion board that I was to sit in front of. I think for him it would have been an embarassment if I were not in correct uniform. In the Marines, I understand, they are not even allowed to wear unit citations unless they were actually in the unit at the time that the citation was earned.

It was't intended to be about the the drone program directly. In fact it was pretty much an "anti-drone" statement.
I voiced my feelings regarding war pretty clearly in my opening paragraph. I just don't see how being a joystick jockey could be considered as "heroic" or braver than a person who had to face combat situations. No matter if they were on the "right" or "wrong" side. p.s.; Yes I served. My country called and I fulfilled my obligation. No, I didn't see combat and had no desire to.

To this day, I always look at someone's ribbons and find the NDSM. I've always considered it sort of a dividing line. Anything below that doesn't mean much to me. I was looking at Gen. Allen' chest yesterday in a picture and it looked like the NDSM was about 3 or 4 rows up his chest. To the point of the OP, I think it belongs farther down the chest somewhere. For the time being. But can air to air drone combat be far away? Then there would appear to be little difference between a fighter pilot Ace and a drone pilot Ace. Would there be any difference in awarding the AF's distinguished flying medal to a drone jockey as opposed than to an in seat jet jockey? |
