....yes.

You were the one who put yourself and your vehicle at risk by failing to make a good plan ahead of the event. Once the event occurs, the outcome is now out of your control.
Well duh.

You fail to see the irony of the situation whereby you made a conscious choice to put yourself and your vehicle in potential harm, however you wish to rail against those individuals for which you already have prior knowledge will likely do you harm.
I've already admitted my culpability in the matter, in the OP and several times since then.

I see no irony. What I do see is certain persons unable to realize that a wrong is a wrong, regardless of another wrong.

You, like tbo, don't see the application of a tu quoque fallacy.

It would be far more appropriate to rant against yourself in this thread. It is a certainty that the behavior of those that encountered you and your flares could be predicted in advance (the only variable is the degree of their idiocy). Thankfully, you're not writing about a totalled Mercedes.............or worse.
Alrighty then. You are never again allowed to comment on a single bit of wrongdoing in the world because you have also perpetrated some form of wrongdoing in the past.

Certainly it's just as logical as your suggestion.

Glad you had the experience without additional problems with the DB's on the road...;)

Bet you won't push the mileage again without spare fuel in the trunk.:D

The problem with this argument is that the original wrongdoing by you is connected to the wrongdoing by the perpetrators of the flare obliteration.

You fail to see the logic that connects these two events and you never will.

From what I observed on this thread, I bet you're wrong.

 I know it would cure me....

Heck, just having to bleed the fuel system to restart the engine is enough of a PITA to keep me from pushing the mileage...

If you have the fuel, it's only 50-60 strokes on the primer pump.............however, if you have a 603 or later engine..........

Well... I did not know that. Thanks for the info.

The one time I ran out, I did like I've done on other diesels...
Loosened the fuel filter and pumped until fuel came out, then cracked the lines at each injector and pumped until fuel was present....

Still... just because repriming is easier than I thought, I believe I will continue to err on the side of caution.
With my luck, I would run out on a long, curved, uphill onramp....at rush hour...

or.... on the Merritt....

...........still brings back haunting memories. Thankfully, it was daylight, or you'd probably not be speaking to me today.

That trip caused me the greatest possible pucker factor when I decided to take it across the Throgs Neck Bridge with heavy traffic...........uphill climb for nearly one mile. My palms were sweating bullets............vehicle doing 35 mph in the right lane............DB's going ballistic.............

This is a case where I blame myself, unlike the OP. I do not blame any other persons on the Merritt or the TNB for nearly killing me.

If I had simply purchased an OE primary filter none of that misery would have occurred.

Give's me the pucker just thinking about it.

The OP is an individual who knows the limits of the vehicle with regard to fuel economy. Should such a person decide to test the limit, if he's not a complete moron, he carries some extra fuel in the trunk or he weighs the possibility of getting stuck on the side of the road.

I frequently push the SD in an identical manner. Today, the reserve light came on at 505 and I pushed it to 542. However, the day was brilliant sunshine and the temperature was close to 40. So, I weighed the risk of running out and decided to take it. Now, if it's snowing and dark, there is NFW that I push the limits because the consequences of failure can be absolutely dire.

The odometer in the 300GD never worked and I only got around to getting it repaired a few months ago so initially knowing my range was always a guess based on how much fuel I put in vs google maps estimate of my average trips length. Thankfully my reserve fuel light works so I would have an idea of when I was down to the last 40 or so miles of fuel.

I only managed to run out of fuel once....less then a mile from home (I would have made it had it not been for the lemming in front of me on the way home from work who decided to be on the brakes ALL the way down EVERY hill :mad:) Anywho point is I keep a jerry can with an extra 5 gallons on me at all times and in this particular case the #1 concern was to get back on the road ASAP. I could feel her going and I knew why so I pulled completely off the road onto the grass, turned the engine off, grabbed the can, put in about half a gallon in and made it the rest of the way home before I poured the rest of the fuel into the tank in the driveway. Total time to do this was less then a minute :)

That's because you're a man who thinks ahead and plans for those situations where failure could cause you serious injury or death.

Or you can just blame others for your own stupidity............your choice.

I'll stick with planning ahead, just in case ;)

Now where did I put that tow rope that I used to pull a co-worker out of the snow last week......:D

Go look up tu quoque fallacy.

If I rob a store, it gives no one else justification to rob the same store. If I do something stupid, it gives no one else justification to to something stupid.

Then you haven't observed without your own presuppositions.

I had a jerrycan in the trunk. It was empty because I used the fuel and forgot to refill it.

.... you mean like making sure you had a road triangle and plenty of road flares in the trunk?

Or making sure that you schedule minor repairs at the local dealer so that MB roadside assistance availability never lapses?

Or having roadside assistance through your insurance company?

Guess you'd rather just assume.....

I blame others for their wrongdoing. I never blamed them for mine.

If you're going to accuse me of something, you might at least try to be accurate about it.
