I love the contrast between the 30,000 mile service and the actual mileage

It is every 3-5 years, or 30k miles... Whichever comes first.

A Tesla is a very practical car, but not exotic like a Ferrari.

No offense though, a Tesla isn't going to really win you any style points with the ladies. Nor will it do anything for their libido. Now a nice deep Italian V8 at full song... Thats enough to get them wet.

Spot on. Yes, a Porsche is a well built car, but not without issues. Few high dollar items pop into mind, like second gear pop-out, leaking rear main seals, intermediate shaft failures, coolant hoses, and a few other things.

She has good taste! Cayennes are very nice units. I definitely wouldn't mind having one. They do pretty damn well in corners too, as they have pretty beefy sway bars, and coilovers.

What made her go for the Porky?

True, but with some maintenance, a Ferrari will also go to that mileage!

I'll be the first to admit, a Porsche at half or a third of the price of a Ferrari will more than likely blow the doors off the Ferrari. Hell, a friends ZR1 is almost 15 seconds faster around ThunderHill than his Ferrari 360CS!

But, the Ferrari offers "more". Don't know how else to describe it, but I'll do my best to try. It's that fine detail, the intoxicating smell of leather when you open the door, the wail of that strung out V8 or V12 closing in at redline, the sense of occasion when you pilot the car down the street, the cool noises the F1 transmission makes selecting gears, the craftsmanship and detail that goes into the interior, and well, I could go on.

The Porsche, well, yes, it has a fine leather smell, makes a fantastic noise, and has excellent fit and finish, but doesn't reward you with that same sense of accomplishment that the Ferrari does after you have just made her dance. Yes, the Porsche is also fantastic to drive, but it is cold and soul-less. (Like plain sex!)

The Ferrari though... Well, lets just say that it is a scene out of Fifty Shades of Grey... Tease, tease, tease, release.

+1 on what Justin said. Also, you have to remember with the Exotic cars is that the company if its Ferrari or any other they want to see that car on the road in 20+ years. Upkeep and preventive repairs are #1 priority. Its a truly amazing thing to see a 30 year old Ferrari being driven around while most 30 year old cars are in a junk yard. Its a true sense of pride to keep something so beautiful for such a long period of time. All cost will not matter and should not matter when you are spending this kind of money to just buy the car. They took the time to build a car at no expense spared and they expect the owner to upkeep it at no expense spared.

On a number of Ford products from the 90's there is a way to reach the bolts necessary for engine service.

You just remove the wheel from the side of the car the engine is facing. Then look for some circle shaped 'dimples' and cut them out with a hole saw. The bolts are now very easy to reach.

The holes can be filled with plugs or just left open.

Yes, I know this is crude, but a lot of mechanics do it. Hey! These are Fords we are talking about, not Bentleys.

I worked at one place that had a lot of Chevys with the Duramax. Our maintenance program included changing fuel filters quite often (probably way more than necessary). In order to do that job, you had to take off the right inner fender. We ended up with a pile of right inner fenders in a corner that we took off and never put back on.

Their are a few 360's running around with lots of miles on them

The Gotham Dream Car guys in NYC totaled out their 360 work horse with 91k, very, very hard miles on it. If the car wasn't smashed up it would be well over 100k now.

Like anything if you keep up on it they last a long time.

Maybe its because I'm used to boats but I still think cars are cheap to own. Heck even my boat which isn't that large costs me $3k a year for dockage, $5k a year for fuel, $500 a year for insurance, and that doesn't even get into running and the once a year upgrade/upkeep project, so that's another $3k-$5k. If you want to keep any boat pretty nice in a saltwater environment you need to do at least one big project on it every year to just keep up. Next year I'm going to spend $2k pulling off the windshield and radar arch to have them sand blasted and re powder coated.

$10k-$30k a year on a boat is very normal around here, so spending 200k on a car than it needing in this Ferrari's case maybe $4k-$5k a year in service is cheap compared to say what it would cost to own a Hatteras 46 for a bit more money. Heck $5k would be dockage at my marina, and $2,400 would fill the tanks once...

At least with a car you can take off the insurance, park it in a garage with a cover on it, and it won't cost you anything to own. With a boat that's not really an option...

Audi S7 too small, ditto the Panamera.

I have seen a Lamborghini Murcielago online in Europe with 257,000 miles. Track car and all.

Yup, it's because you're used to boats. Not counting fuel or insurance, I've spent about seven to eight thousand dollars on my 300D, including the $800 purchase price. Fuel and insurance (about 1240 gallons@say $3.25 average) bring that up by another six or so. Fourteen thousand dollars in seven and a half years. Less than two grand a year for everything.

I made the comments I did regarding Ferrari and Porsche because I used to work in a shop that serviced Porsches, and many were indeed daily drivers. I was unaware of anyone anywhere using a Ferrari as a daily, but apparently it does happen. The shop I worked at was attached to a dealership. We had a Ferrari for sale (a Dino, actually IIRC). I never saw it move.

They are expensive to maintain. The last major on my Ferrari was $6000. I've had it for 15 years and would never think of getting rid of it.

The Maserati is a little cheaper and is a blast.

Lately, I've been shopping for a newer F car to add to the stable. If things work out, I should have one in a few months.
