A new addition to the stable: the contenders.
Option one:
Option two: Option Three: Keeping both the W210 and the W123 as well. Yes, Option #1 would be diesel.

Option 1 or 3.

Option 1 if it's the diesel, option 3 otherwise.

If AWD needed, #3. If not, given your mild climate, #1 (in Diesel of course).

option 3 since subaru is the only manufacturer to take the time and make the car fit the environment of the ad in a believable way.
Option 1 those people are either 3 feet tall, or thats a special one off version of the jetta wagon that happens to be the size of a FEDEX truck. On the other hand, option 2 is a special small sized camry about 8 feet long.

Camry Hybrid is the best. 40 MPG all day long. It will out last the other 2 and has the lowest cost of maintenance.

I would go with the Jetta, and get it with a 6-speed standard (saves $1000, and gets better mileage). Consumer Reports rates the diesel with as having average reliability, and VWs in general have greatly improved in this category since, say, 2003 (I have Consumer Reports car buying guides dating back to then), and CR also reported getting 49 MPG on the highway -- their MPGs tend to reflect those of the average driver. Also, it is not by any means guaranteed that we will be getting a refreshed Jetta wagon, so this may be your last chance at the car!
After that, the Subaru is a commendable choice also (but please get it with a standard!). (me in bold) Quote:

I'll bet you can get something like that with the Jetta too, and the Jetta is a whole lot more practical! The Camry rear seats don't fold down, and it's a sedan.

This is also tempting. We tested one, but I don't want to be the early adopter while undiscovered bugs are worked out of the system. 45-48mpg if the estimates are to be believed.

Oooh... pushing someone away form a diesel? What will you do next? Tell him to get a miniv*n? (I know I'm pushing the infraction line, but I DID censor the word...)

So what are your needs? Those are vastly different cars....I would go with the VW, great interior and the JSW was before they cheapened the mk7 Jetta. Looks great for a wagon IMO as well. Do yourself a favor and test drive a GTI or even a Golf TDI. I'm very happy with my GTI. I would NOT go with the Jetta sedan. I am not a fan of those, they feel cheap interior-wise, and the leatherette-tex stuff is awful, feels like rubber.

The need is reliable transportation. The desires are efficiency, cargo space, and comfort.
We don't have kids or a dog. We don't need a truck. We may wish to drive down a few desert roads every now and then.

VW DC system
I think it's called a DC Transmission, (I may be wrong so don't shoot me), but lots of folks have had to eat a SERIOUS REPAIR BILL when it goes South as VW is NASTY about honoring the warranty. Also the fit/finish of the VW ain't that good IMHO. I compared them to Hyundai, Subie and VW rates on a par with Kia.
Toyota Camry Hybrid ain't that great. NYC DOT has a fleet and they are seriously in the shop a lot! If you go for this buy the Factory Extended Warranty as you will be needing it. Subies are great but small inside compared to others at better prices. Check out the Hyundai Santa Fe AWD or iy you want a Hybrid the Sonata Hybrid. As good as Toyota on gas and better under the new NHTSA crash test ratings. |

We tested a Subaru Legacy and a Crosstrek today.
The Legacy was a well mannered sedan with the 2.5L Boxer. Really miss the grunt of a diesel in that car. A turbocharger on the engine would have improved its performance and killed mileage. I thought the quality was there, but my gf wasn't comfortable in the passenger seat. The Crosstrek was comfortable. I think it "fit" better than the Impreza sit test, since it was a raised version of an Impreza. There was just one complaint. It is kind of underpowered. The torque factor just isn't there. It would be very comfortable with a 2.5L N/A engine and still retain good MPG, but until Subaru up-sizes the engine and gets rid of those ridiculous cookie-cutter wheels, I, along with most modest consumers, will stay away.

Sorry folks. I had to share this with the VW folks in order to paint a picture of what some of us W210 W124 W123 W126 diesel owners are like.
"Okay folks. Perhaps you need a bit more background about my mentality and tenacity when it comes to keeping a car running. This should probably read as the German Diesel Lovers Manifesto. Firstly, I do enjoy the smell of Lubro-Moly Diesel Purge in the early morning hours. It quickens the senses and just slightly stings the eyes. The simple joy of an oil change only requiring 30 minutes and nearly 2 gallons of synthetic is piece of mind for another 8-12k miles. I can tell by the pitch and tempo of the klatta-klatta of the injection pump if it's happy and healthy or under-lubricated and sickly. I look at the slow warmup period of the oil-motor's coolant and corresponding delayed availability of cabin heat as a time of introspection and appreciation for the electrically heated seats (where available). I have no qualms about replacing all of the worn rubbery bits on suspensions, engines, steering and transmission links to keep the rattly/sloppy/leaky gremlins at bay for years to some. I appreciate that leaking diesel fuel is not to be looked at as a time for alarm, but a time for using said fuel as a cleaning solvent to remove many miles of road dust from the engine bay, transmission housing, etc. Sooty panels around the exhaust are our badge of honor, only to be washed off only for lofty presentation purposes. Broken bits and baubles will not deter our love for our car, so long as the wheels are turning and the low guttural growl of the torque-rich inline continues to provide an undercurrent of "go". I am an engineer, and yes I have my own shop coveralls and specialized German automotive tools."
