What's take to import a Benz to the USA?

I've been looking at cars online and most are not local! Since I live in Ca., I face some tariffs due to smog legislation and you can guess how much I like taxes...

What additional purchase costs do I need to think about if I buy something from out of the country, say from Canada? The car would be late model, last couple of years, so would there be any DOT regulations to worry about? Does DB build them all US compliant now?

All advice is welcome!

John,

Do the Benz's destined for Canada use an analog speedo face showing both miles/km? I believe the digital displays are configurable between metric and english units, so that should not be a problem. The car I'm most interested in resides in Ontario, do you know where I can check the VIN against Canada's equvilent to the U.S. DOT? I want to make sure it is not grey market or European, but actually North American prepared.

Thx, Ed

This is an interesting issue. Spent a little time in Thailand last year and noticed a LOT of Benzes around. Most were lowered with wheels,,, really looked good and taken care of. One thing that stood out was in a few late models I looked in they didn't seem to have airbags. I am sure that is just the tip of the iceberg as far as differences go between USA Benzes and others sold around the world.

Ed,

Search the archives then join the ranks of those who won't bother. The CA DMV doesn't even have forms for registering a car from another country unless you bring it in as an immigrant. Even then you have to wade through DOT paperwork that will make your head spin.

MB lobbied very hard to make sure you buy your next MB from MB USA.

I also wanted to bring over a late model S600. They are much cheaper in Germany because most people cannot afford to pay for the gas of the big V12's. It's not even worth it. The paper work is huge but also the cost of conversion. There's another $9000 in work for that. So the savings is offset.

Well damm..

It seems like CA makes it very difficult for me to import a car with less than 7500mi on the odometer. Looks like I'll have to keep looking... thanks to all for the responses!

If anyone sees a Quartz Blue CLK 430 convt. for sale, please let me know!

Rgds, Ed
