People who don't really belong on boats go on cruise ships and expect it to be like a hotel.

I wish there were no problems flying 99.9999 percent of the time. I've been stranded in airports overnight many times.

Stranded at 35,000 feet (or 200 feet for that matter) is the problem and is the .0001% noted above. It's not exactly a bus, you know............ |

Who was on duty in the Engine Room and where was the Fire Control Team? Unless the Fuel Oil Return Line runs where it can leak onto something really hot the Diesel Fuel is not going to burst into Flames. My last job I worked for as a Security Guard Company contracted to the Carnival Cruise line in Long Beach. I was one of the X-ray Machine readers. What I wanted to speak of was the Crew that came off of the Ships. The upper echelons of the Crew are European or Australian and some from India. The lower echelons are from the India Sri Lanka area or Pilipino and Indonesian. Each time the Ship came in some were allowed off the Ship for a few hours to buy stuff or to catch a Plane back home. All of the seemed overworked and the lower echelon Crew Members seemed not quite fearful but overly respectful to the higher echelon Crew Members. I also shook the Hand of the Guy on the News they said was the CEO or the Carnival Cruise Line (I saw him on TV making comments); when I met Him He was one of the Vice Presidents of the Cruise line.

I've been wondering the same thing since the fire occurred.
There should be some (or more) redundancy in emergency wiring that can be served from multiple locations aboard ship, independent of the "engine room". And the emergency service should cover much more for cruise ships than it apparently does. Lighting and sanitary facilities on every second or third deck maybe? The vacuum sanitary system, or some parts of it should have a separate, independent power system. I'll bet they had power on the bridge and in "Officer's Country." Funny thing, but a client of mine in Orlando told me last week to keep his business tax return for a while because he's going on a cruise.! |

They have several generators, wherever the fire was it must have disabled most of them.
Fire on a boat is quite dangerous, those people are lucky it was brought under control. Much better off floating on a cruise ship than swimming in the water for several days.

Me too. I've flown about 1.3 million miles in the past 13 years, and mechanical delays are incredibly common.
