Philadelphia was really close to 400 last year as well IIRC

When I was out on the road years ago. The occassional truck driver told me even then to stay out of philly if possible. This was well before Detroit took a dump.

Some neighborhoods have gotten better but just as many or more worse. The vast majority of these homicides are drug or gang related to be fair. I've been in some sketchy areas and haven't had any problems in the 7 years I've lived here (actually looking at houses in Philly as well). Worse is a couple of the ring-towns since they have understaffed police and but bad overspill. Camden, NJ ("homicide capital of the country") is one of these, as well as Chester, PA and Upper Darby which are rapidly deteriorating. Like Detroit, Chester has land and houses that they literally can't even give away. Luckily my area is nowhere near that category despite being close in proximity. Also, a LOT of racial tension in Philly.

I used to live in Philly (45th and Osage, just west of the Zoo of Penn) about 10 years ago. Anything close to the center or the universities really isn't that bad, and South Street area is pretty fun -- think of a larger version of St. Mark's Place in NYC. I've been back, and it doesn't seem like the central parts at least have gotten worse.

If anything, fewer cretins stealing cars, burning them and dumping them on 95.

If you live in Detroit, look at he bright side the murder rate and taxes are higher in Chicago. You may just want to think a little before voting next time.

Lack of work in the area means that there are many that can't afford to move, no matter how much they want to.

Isn't that an annual tradition in Detroit, though this one is about 4 months too late? Devil's Night or something.

Wonder if Michigan should institute the firing squad for political corruption as a temporary measure, like our cousins to the far East do. Since that would be un-American, perhaps the ducking stool or pillory would also work.

Stop tossing out tempting ideas. ;)

Now the attitude is: It is hopeless, Bulldoze everything, and turn it back into a swamp, it will cost less with fewer deaths.
