I am by no means poor, but I went to buy garden variety popcorn today and left it on the shelf at $2.50 for 2 pounds. You know something is wrong in this country when that happens.

Being and feeling poor may just be a state of mind. I am not posting this from a smart ass perspective. Feeling poor might enable more of the same. No two cases being identical.
Real poverty may just be the inability to adjust either from a knowledge perspective or wallowing in it. If it has created mental depression in the situation then the state may remain in place much easier. I am not arguing the point that the so called poor will be with society for a long time. Just that an individual can usually change their state of being if they seriously work at it. Not wanting to pay the price when the percieved value is not present is not being poor. Paying constantly what the market thinks you can bear can either keep you poor or certainly decrease your overall well being. Whenever I find myself working around the going price the driver of it is usually because I feel it is overpriced. Late last night I ordered a crank position sensor. The oem part made in china from china. Nineteen dollars delivered. The same sensor but usually aftermarket here is 179.00-250.00 locally. In my opinion it is seriously overpriced. Useage even comes to mind pertaining to the local cost of it. Certain prices we are unable to do much about. We are basically captive to them. Still in all too many cases we do not look at the problems carefully enough even with them. The manufacturer of the sensor was still making a profit at what I paid remember. Part of the price differance is that it's delivery will in all probability be slow. The vehicle is still running although harder on fuel and lower on power somewhat but not used that much and showng a hard reocurring code for the position sensor being off value. Even if it does not turn out to be the issue there is a lot less to be lost from a dollar perspective with the chinese parts longer shipping time. If the sensor killed the engine and I had to have it yesterday I might take one off a wreck as few vehicles would have been sent to the wreckers for a bad one. Just a small minor thing but over the year the cumulative value of tackeling many things from their cost perspective really can be a signifigant dollar not spent. My point being that the local retail price for that part is way out of line. Far too many prices on other things are as well. Last edited by barry12345; 03-03-2013 at 01:23 PM. |

I am cognizant that how I do things is not exactly mainsteam thank goodness. The economy would probably collapse if the vast majority did. It is just both a habit and learnt behaviour left from the days when we had far less. |

Waiting a few days for a part to show up to save a significant $ is absolutely what I would do. At the referenced prices, you could even rent a car for a day or two and be ahead of the game. The few things I have ordered directly from China have actually gotten to me every bit as fast as if the shipment had originated in the US. There seem to be a few retailers in the US (peachparts is one) that actually understand that they need to ship items ASAP if they want return customers. The Chinese ship almost immediately, and the extra time is understandable. The sheer number of things I have purchased from US suppliers who 'generate' a tracking number, but don't actually ship the product for another 3 days.... That pisses me off, and unless they are significantly lower on a price, will end my business transactions with them. Then they wonder why the business is struggling....

We burn good hardwood as firewood locally. Just try to buy some sticks and boards of it from a local building supply store. . Clear stock dried to furniture grade is about 35.00 for a four inch wide stick 3/4 inches thick by five feet long. This is usage to the extreme almost. Few places even stock hardwood anymore is another issue. Other than flooring that is.
Needing a fair amount I dropped by a widow builder and general woodworking shop. Asked to pick through their hardwood shorts knowing they had been there for a long time and were really dry. Walked out with perhaps five hundred dollars of local retail cost hardwood for twenty dollars. I just will not use chipboard and particle board even if veneered in construction of anything. Having periodically tried over a long period of time my opinion just will not change. This leaves me using a lot of 3/4 baltic birch plywood for shelving in closets etc. The problem with that product is it is not flat but undulateds across the sheets. So a still front supporting and straightening finish product is always needed across the front. Esthetically after being machined to pleasant contours and installed it both looks nice and does exactly what I wanted. I find it hard to instill even the ideal in young people that there can be sensible alternatives than just paying the going price on many things. For some strange reason unike most cultures in the world north american culture is different than most when it comes to buying. Buying right is where the money really is in my opinion. Especially if resale is intended. |

I like that and try to live it. Never found words to express it. My friends ask me if I'm going to travel when I retire and my initial response was "probably." But as I think about it, probably not. I've already done that.
The only two places I'd like to visit would be the South Pacific islands and cruise up the Mekong in Laos. That's about it. Well, I have also thought about taking a 2 week Arabic immersion course I have seen offered in Morocco. I took 2 semesters of Arabic 10-15 years ago and got to where the language began to make sense beyond literal translation. Maybe I was at a 3 or 4 year-old's level. I found it deeply expressive. It would be fun to live it for a couple of weeks. But really, I just want to live a quiet life in the rural United States. |
