Interesting article on the cost of healthcare...

Instead of concentrating on who's going to pay, the real quest should be to figure out why it costs so much.

There is no negative feedback loop. Feedback is driven by the comsumers' out of pocket expenses. If the expense is low then there is no reason NOT to take advantage of everything the system has to offer, reasonable or not. For example, preventive care would be more important to individuals if they paid a greater proportion of medical care.

I think the biggest contributor is that fact that everything involved in health care is a business not a non-profit.

So long as profit is the driving source in health care the cost to the consumer will not drop.

Along with that goes a huge conflict of interest. You have Pharm, hospitals trying to make a profit but are supposed to tell you to go home and take an aspirin when all you have is a simple head ache as opposed to running some expensive tests to rack up a huge bill.

Profit is what drives the engine of the world. Remove profit from the equation and we guarantee perpetual mediocrity and stifle innovation. But you do get stability.

BS. There are tons of non-profits that provide far better service than profit run organizations. My wife works for one of them.

As I recall, Barry stated that the hospitals in Canada are all state/government owned. The hospitals charge enough to cover expenses.

I'm not sure how 'profit' has improved our system. If you are rich in the US it's great, if you are not rich or have no insurance, our system sucks.

Non-profits survive off the largesse of for profit companies.

Profits are what provide donors with money they provide to non-profits.

If you read the article, one of the issues is the out of control not for profit hospital systems, ie Sloan-Kettering & MD Anderson. CEO for MD Anderson makes a ridiculous amoount of $$

NOTICE TO FORUM MEMBERS: If you need any surgeries or major health care issues addressed and have either health insurance or the $$$$ to pay for it out of pocket, 2013 is the year to GET IT DONE. Husky has inside information from certain medical professionals that once Obamacare kicks into full swing costs will go UP and the level of care will go DOWN. Think VA grade medical care for everyone. Of course, this will occur over a period of several years so most people won't realize medical care is S-L-O-W-L-Y going into the toilet.

Many senior experienced physicians are using upcoming Obamacare as a reason to RETIRE EARLY and get out while they can. That means you will get stuck with the new, improved Generation X, Y and Millennial doctors who will diagnose you using technology because they are uncomfortable performing a hands-on, let-me-look-you-over-with-my-own-eyes exam.

You: "Doc, my back is killing me".

Generation X,Y or Millennial doctor: "Let me Google your symptoms on my iPhone so that I can figure out what to do."

I did not say that all profit is bad. I said that health care based on profit is bad. There is a conflict of interest when the health care establishment makes more money the sicker I am. What is their motivation to provide me with an inexpensive solution?

Agreed. There are always exceptions to the rule and it would appear that the guidelines for Non-Profit need to be re-examined and monitored. Anderson it would seem according to the article is not a non-profit. At least not in the way a lay person would see it.

$1.50 for an ibuprofen tablet is insane. We buy it from Costco, 1000 tablets for $10.49. That's $0.01049 per tablet. It's the same tablet you get from the hospital...that's one hell of a mark-up.

US healthcare costs are far higher than those of industrialized countries with socialized medicine. Canada is a good example but I believe all European countries have lower costs than the USA. I'd like to see some evidence that for-profit medicine is cheaper than socialized medicine.

Having seen through my father's experiences with the VA...we're screwed. Being nothing but a number is not the way to the best care. Your doctor will no longer be in charge of your care, he'll be busy herding cattle through the gates, so to speak.
