How about ditching IRS and implement Fed Sales Tax?

Let's face it, most of the population spends 95% of what they earn.

Instead of using a failure of a tax system with loopholes and baby mama's 6k return due to child credits every year, put a flat 10% Federal sales tax on any purchased items and completely remove any end of year tax filing. Full paychecks to all, and you can spend what you have and that's it.

Done and done.

Exempt food and meds and you're good to go.

Purchases from over-seas would go through the roof.

It would affect the poor disproportionately more than the rest.

So, then what are they (IRS) supposed to do with all those hollow point bullets they've been buying??

Great idea. Every year I do my taxes I figure the waste of time and lost productivity for the nation. This year the IRS still hasn't mailed the forms (out of stock), several weeks after I requested them. They want to coerce everyone into e-filing, claiming free software (not free for me). I have tried commercial tax software and they don't help with the main hassles (collating receipts and statements), have sometimes hit "can't do that", and they are expensive. BTW, I write software in my day job. The main thing e-filing has done is allow crooks to steal "refunds" under your SSN, and you suffer for it.

The main claim is that the poor will pay more if a sales tax since they spend their money while the rich sit on theirs. It seems money has no value unless you spend it, so I expect we would hit the rich too. As is, taxes are fairly even across the board when you consider social security (i.e FICA tax for a welfare program, SS is not a savings account), the rates for capital gains, etc. Everyone is just afraid they will lose some imagined benefit in the current system. Guess what, the mortgage write-off is not a benefit, but rather a break-even proposition, which is why rental income has always allowed a full write-off of loan interest.

A Federal Sales TAX would be too easy to gradually raise. I have been told the Income Tax was only supposed to be temporary.

Worse than that the Government might decide to keep the Income Tax and have a Sales Tax.

People would be buying even cheaper and junker stuff.

Yes, everytime some one on Welfare buys something it would be Taxed.

The other Countries would raise the tariffs’ on US goods.

Huh?! Impossible. You spend, you pay. Regardless how much. One rate fits all. 100% fair for all Americans - finally. I would support it in a minute!

An equal consumption tax on what one buys, for all Americans; "affects the poor disproportionately?" One rate for ALL the spending that equal Americans do, regardless, is not fair?

:confused: Huh?! Poor ppl pay more? How? After all, they're poor! Sorry, but that theory makes no sense, since you only pay tax on what you spend. Whether you're rich or poor.....makes no difference. Ppl with more wealth, are naturally going to spend more money. Hence, they pay MORE TAXES! Always have and always will. That's a no-brainer.

Believe me, I spend money like no tomorrow on all kinds of goods and services as most ppl do yearound, and still have left over money to "sit on." Why would anyone care what I do with it? That doesn't even begin to make sense to care about others' money or spending......:laughing:

some people are more equal than others.

It has always seemed to me that taxing consumption encourages thrift and makes more sense than punishing productivity through income tax.

That said, the IRS employs nearly 100K people. Too big to fail?
Not holding my breath till we switch to federal sales tax.
