Cool! My friend and I drove one all through the mtns of northern Mexico in the '70's. It was a lot of fun. But don't get in a hurry.

Split windscreen stopped in the early 1960's? Round glass in back?

I drove one as a company service vehicle during part of the early 60s. An experience I could not forget. Easy on fuel and quality built for the times. Go almost anywhere with it's good road clearance and skinny tires plus the weight on the back end.

Even then when the speed limit was lower it was about all I could get out of it speedwise. Probably fifty miles an hour on the flat but I do not remember. Visability when driving was good too I remember. Crosswinds sailing was just something you got used to. A good headwind was also interesting. It is safe to say that when in that vehicle you knew where the wind was blowing from. That feature was a no cost option.

The vehicle gave little trouble. Looking back in those days the volkswagon service departments for their product where cheap, fast and good. Perhaps over the years the best service I ever got on vehicles. Had a couple of volkswagon bugs in that period of my own as well.

Are you sure that the kit is at your age level?

OK, you win. I'm impressed.

How does your girlfriend like her 300D?

I had a 59 splitty in college. Paid three hundred dollars for it. The rear compartment had been gutted to use it for hauling stuff. No worries, we put in lawn chairs. The passenger side door had the hilarious habit of flying open if you took a left turn too fast. Mine went to MX a lot too.

Had a '67. King pins were stiff as can be when I got it. Lots of grease later, they were nice and loose, then too loose! Loads of fun to drive, but eventually dtropped a valve in #3. Swapped in an engine from a '69 bug. Loads of fun driving that beast. The parts guy at VW was abler to get all kinds of crazy parts for me for it. Side door hinges, windshield wiper bushings, wierd stuff. Same parts guy is now parts manahger at my local MB dealership. He can still get all kinds of wierd parts for me.
