Just made a few great deals...My HT will be complete sooner than I thought.
After picking up the new A/V receiver for the living room a few weeks ago, I decided I no longer needed the Vizio VSB210WS soundbar and subwoofer, so I sold them today 15 minutes after listing it on Craigslist.
I found a pair of Cerwin Vega speakers that the guy was asking $100 for. After talking to him on the phone, he said he'd take $75, and deliver them to me since he was coming up to my area this evening. I'll have my son hook them up tonight. I was really hoping to pick up a powered sub-woofer, but these should provide all the bass I'll need. In one day, after getting out of the hospital, I sold something no longer needed, used that money to buy something I needed, and still have $65 in my pocket to use for another amp for the front surrounds...not bad for someone in my condition! My goal is to sell a few more items to fund the needed amp and build a new center channel speaker. Once I get those and a better universal remote, the system will be complete. I plan on doing all of this using only money from selling un-needed equipment I already have.

I got some Cerwin Vegas off a guy that was wanting to so with the smallest speakers he could find. I think he was switching everything over to Bose.
They really work. I have had them for at least ten years and have not been able to tear them up yet! |

A buddy of mine had a set in the 90's that were super tight. We tried blowing them with the amp that he had, 600 watt 2- channel if I remember right, and couldn't do it. They were amazing speakers. I'm hoping that these are half the speakers those were. If not, I'll post them for sale at $150, and use the proceeds for something else.

I remember CV speakers from the 60s and 70s. Are they still made?

Yes, but I'm reading that they aren't as good as the ones they made 20 years ago. The ones that were delivered to me tonight sound really nice, with more than enough bass, but they don't sound as good as they used to. I may replace the tweeters so i can get the higher crisper sound I think it needs.

Piss on subwoofers. Your better off without them. I got a pair of old fishers from a neighbor a few months back. 15" woofer with mids and tweets. Very clear and will shake pictures off the wall.
One of my favorite songs for testing speakers is duhast by rammstein when he hits the drums at the beginning.

I learned to use those songs to balance car stereo speakers and amps back in the 1990's when I competed in SPL competitions. Other people were using basic pre-recorded computer generated sounds that were mono, not stereo, so their systems weren't as balanced and realistic as the sound I could recreate. It was a trick I learned from a former California competitor that set up shop in Ohio. If those songs sound crystal clear, then being able to recreate natural sounds such as babbling brooks and singing birds on them is easy.

They're still in service today, refreshed and sounding as good as new in my mom's game room. Great sounding speakers...for the technology at the time.

feeling better???
Hi JP --- It appears you are feeling better with all this stereo talk. Are you?
I'm currently putting together a stereo system......mainly to expose my daughters to "records" --- the vinyl kind with music on them. So, I've been searching eBay for a Direct Drive Turntable. Can you give me a few hints as to the brands that I should be going after or the ones I should stay away from? Ideally, I want a turntable that can play records with the dust cover DOWN --- remember the ones you couldn't? And if I could get 78 rpm on it, that would be a major bonus!!! I already have an amp, small speakers, receiver, and cassette deck --- My plan is to gradually improve the system. I don't know the output on the amp just yet.....and the speakers are quite small; so those 2 things I'm on the search for, too ---- but not short term. Thanks!!!

As for the turn table...Look in you local pawn and second hand shops. If the local shops don't know what they have, you can get a great deal on some things. I picked up a Technics SL-1200MK2 last year at a Goodwill for $30. It's a great direct drive turntable that will play with the dustcover down. Here's a good Realistic brand... Realistic Lab 395 Automatic Turntable | eBay Magnavox (Philips) put out a couple decent ones as well. Personally, as a starting point, any of the older stereos with a turntable on top would work for now. It would show the kids how we used to listen to music.
