The Rolex strap information is important. A friend of mine bought a Rolex about 30 years ago with the gold and stainless strap. The seller pointed out he needed to keep up with the links since on his watch the gold part of the links were not plated but solid gold.

In the old days, when gold coins were used, you could soak them in a type of acid that would etch off a bit of the gold. You could etch off some, wash off the coin, and then go spend the coin. You would still have a bit of gold left over in the acid.

This was so common it was known as 'sweating' a coin.

Today folks 'sweat' links from a Rolex strap by just removing them, so if you ever go for a high buck Rolex it is wise to treat the watch as one purchase and the strap as another.

Check out the Seiko Spirit line. No SwissSnob factor but the finishing and style is a step above anything else in the price range IMO. They dont sell them in the USA but you can find them at higuchi-inc or seiya (google).

I've bought watches from a place called Watches Etc. in Oklahoma City. The owner is Charley Johnson (I believe) and they deal in and service about any brand. Not an authorized dealer but they always have a number of used Rolexes in stock and are very knowledgeable and fair. I bought my Submariner in 1992 and it was a 1980 model. It has been flawless and Charley has said he would buy it back or allow a trade-in of $3500 anytime.
I'm sure they have a website and would ship. And they have quite a few other brands also, I just gravitate to the Rolexes. If you would like an in-person look at something I am in the neighborhood every month or so.

That's a good recommendation on the Hamilton - I've been looking at their watches recently, and they have some pretty decent product.

This is a good place to look for a watch in that price range and lower.

What is the purpose? Is it a dress watch? Do you want it for a specific purpose or just for everyday wear? From many threads in the past you know I like Omega because of it's history of sea and space and I prefer the looks but in the last few years I have been wearing my Suunto's I know we don't wear out watches for status (wink wink)but I get more compliments on my Suunto's than any other watch.
