2014 E250 Bluetec diesel

Automobile magazine
Quote:
Aside from that way-early drive of the E400, Mercedes slipped us into the four-cylinder 2014 E250 Bluetec diesel - sorry, wagonistas, it's sedan-only for the U.S. - that arrives in August. Displacement drops by roughly 50 percent to 2.1 liters versus the current 3.0-liter diesel six. But the new turbo-diesel is a fuel-sipping smoothie, with 195 horses and 369 lb-ft of torque. At a steady highway pace through the swelling hills of Catalonia, we managed 44 mpg, a remarkable gain over today's E350 Bluetec. Another economic upside: Mercedes confirmed that the rear-wheel-drive E250 Bluetec will become the most affordable E-class of all, undercutting the current E350 Bluetec's $53,105 base price. The E250 will offer optional 4Matic AWD.

No wagon? As always, the US auto market gets the scraps, leftovers, and turds. The average American auto buyer should be painlessly put to sleep.

I think with MBUSA it's also their image they like to keep up. They are very careful not to cheapen the brand to much.

I think it is a little of both....

I think that if demand for a diesel wagon were that great, we would see a proliferation of VW TDi wagons. Instead, I have seen 2.

I do not see how a wagon would hurt the brand much. Audi and BMW gave it a try. The E wagon has been around for quite some time but aside from the 123 did not seem to be too popular. MB has the GLK, R and ML so it seems to me a C/E wagon would be redundant. I know I have no interest in a wagon and judging from the numbers you see on the roads I do not think may others want it wither. I'd get one of the aforementioned alternatives if I needed something to haul stuff around in.

As I recall, isn't the GLK built on the C chassis anyway? Basically a wagon anyways just with more space.

GLK = a fake little trucklet for insecure little soccer moooooomies who are too afraid to be seen in a wagon, since their mom drove one in the 80s. Worse MPG: check. Taller/worse handling: check. What redeeming traits does the thing have, other than making dumb bints and femme guys look butch?

Then don't get one. Geez. Personally, I like them. A step up from a sedan, lots of room.

If more normal wagons were actually available in this country, I'd have much less of a problem with the tall wagons whored out to look like trucks.

The new CLA just made a liar out of you.

This little fwd puddle jumper is under $30,000 msrp and is designed for "conquest" buyers in their early 20s who could be lured into one for a lease payment of under $300 a month, and likely will be undermaintained, and probably discarded at the end of the lease...

The huge grille star was once - up to about 1991 - reserved solely for the top of the line 560SEC and 560SL cars.

Now it's seen a,l over the model ine -- on the CLA, C class and even their mini vans and SUVs.

The cars now are built to a price point, and NOT first designed and engineered to a cost no object standard.

Not only has the brand name been cheapened by touting affordability over all else,QC and build quality has suffered and will continue to do so if this path is followed.

Harsh! But correct.

I had a 2012 one as a Mercedes Benz dealer loaner last year for a while. I couldn't stand it.
