Where I work we have an exemption that allows us to fly UAS in some particular areas that have low traffic density and high scientific remote sensing applicability. We have had no problems. I have not flown one nor have I been involved in a project that involved one.

My perspective is probably terribly skewed by the mission that I usually fly -- which is so far out of mainstream aviation that it results in a horrible bias, no question. We fly at about 120-150 ft from Sabine Pass to the Rigolets in a C185 amphib. I fly with one of 2 pilots, both of whom are amazing in their ability to totally focus on their job. Both of us keep a constant watch for power lines, towers and helicopters. And vultures and pelicans... But shyte happens awfully quick at 150 ft. The idea of some petunia-brained operator flying the UAS in my airspace is just scarey. It's bad enough that PHI pilots think they're god in an eggbeater. We usually see helicopters and evade before they spot us. I don't know what freqs they monitor but it's harder'n hell to talk to them. Imagine Petunia brain trying to talk while flying his UAS. OMG.

Maybe somebody could sing me a couple of verses of "John Henry" adapted to UAS vs manned aircraft....
That sounds like some sphincter shrinking flying to me. I have a crop duster buddy at the airport that is scared to death when he's higher than about six or seven hundred feet AGL. I have accused him of having a brother in law in the roofing business. That being what makes him go around raising shingles.

He flies with me some times and I fly sometimes in his 172 with him. It is very strange flying around so low. I have learned a lot from him about what to watch for at low altitude.

This is very hazardous for a multitude of reasons. If you lose power you have very few options. There are lots of towers and high lines even in the boondocks where I fly that could sneak up on you.

BTW my comments regarding UAV's so far in this thread have related to their use in the US.

Best of luck! You Are not in a really safe occupation operating so much at extremely low altitude.

So what to any of this? McCain's rebuke may have been the best thing to happen to conservatism in this country in a long time. Time for McCain to go quietly into retirement.
Ha!!! You are very funny!!!
