General Butt Naked--brutal killer turns preacher
 

Has anyone seen the whole documentary film? It strikes me that his 'conversion' is almost completely self-serving. I have some friends who see it differently. To them he is a great example of the redemptive power of Jesus. Liberia is a seriously screwed-up place. Thinking about him makes me wonder if cultures with honor suicides have something going for them that shouldn't be brushed off quickly.

I watched the Vice Guide to Liberia, they had Buttnaked on there and some other generals including General Rambo. The whole thing was pretty crazy

Yes, the whole country seems like a nightmare. The idea of General Butt Naked as an evangelist or pastor boggles the mind. It's like having Goebbels or Himmler as your local priest or perhaps even worse. They were bureaucrats at the top, Butt Naked was personally a brutal killer, rapist and cannibal who made a smooth transition to Pentecostal preacher without skipping a beat.

BBC story on Butt Naked. 3 videos in sequence. One issue it made me think about was a totally pragmatic one independent of the moral and metaphysical puzzles associated with the situation. It is: Does religion give people something to do other than fight? In other words do the mythical and fantastical elements of Pentecostal christianity as embraced by people like Blahyi, distract the population enough from the awful horrors of their past and present long enough to re-establish a functioning society with enough social sanctions to re-establish and maintain a healthy social and economic order?
