After the end of the ice age, the planet got warmer. Then, 5,000 years ago, it started to get cooler — but really slowly. In all, it cooled 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit, up until the last century or so. Then it flipped again — global average temperature shot up.

"Temperatures now have gone from that cold period to the warm period in just 100 years," Marcott says.

So it's taken just 100 years for the average temperature to change by 1.3 degrees, when it took 5,000 years to do that before.

Those who think their efforts can make eliminate the effects of MMGW balance out those who think MMGW is a crock. As with politics, that leaves the rest of us in the middle that don't see it as black and white but shades of grey.

The climate on this rock has been changing since the first critters evolved from that primordial soup or the big dude in the sky worked his magic. Since we're not living in a vacuum, I'd expect it to continue to change.

Thanks to advancements in science, technology, chemistries, etc. we in developed nations will continue to get cleaner and "greener." That will generally result in a better quality of life. But will it do anything to stem climate change? Or are we just along for the ride?

Yes it will be in flux forever but the point of the info in the OP is that we have introduced a variable into the mix that has probably accelerated the pace of change. There is no doubt that we have found copious amounts of buried carbon and burned it. And no indication that we plan to move away from that strategy.

It's a near certainty that the planet-wide temp has been rising. It varies locally. It has considerable inter-annual variability locally and globally. But the trend is reasonably undeniable.

What is less certain is how, and to what degree humanity contributes to it.

In my opinion the burden of proof on the anthropogenic contribution has shifted firmly into the camp of those who do not believe humanity has significantly contributed to global warming.

Bot, I appreciate your reasonable tone --it is far more effective (IMO) than all the hysterical rants.
I would like your comment---At some point in the history of this debate, it was said that none of the mathematical models used to predict global warming worked when fed historical data. Maybe that is inarticulately said. What I meant was that if known historical data was fed into the models, none of them correctly "forecast" what we know actually happened. It was also said that the models were flawed because they neglected the effect of the sun and the variations in solar output.
Have the models improved to where these two criticisms are no longer valid?
