It's been my experience that it's left and right from the perspective of sitting in the driver's seat. You need "left".

Left. Its as if you were sitting in the car.

As opposed to driver's side and passenger side? That becomes a little confusing in vehicles sold in both RHD and LHD markets.

Without Googling, who knows why left and right are called port and starboard in nautical terms?

Starboard=steerboard, the side the steering oar is on. Don't want to dock with the steerboard between the boat and the dock hence the other side being called port.

someone also told my why they put the toilet in the front of the ship. so the smell does not travel the length of the ship with the wind.

I was told starboard was from the celestial navigation days when a board (I'm thinking "a plank") was attached to the right side of the ship to assist in seeing the stars. You couldn't moor with that side up against the dock so the other side was always used up against the dock while in port. I learned something today. Thanks.

It is port (left) starboard (right) It is this way so one does not get confused no matter if one is in front (bow) of boat or stern (rear) of boat
