fuel economy of an 85 190e 2.3?
Anybody have experience with a 190e? EPA rates a five speed only 25 mpg. Is that right?

Tom the car is fairly heavy for a compact 4 door sedan in American trim and A/C. I would say that the average is in that range.

That's about right. I had a '91 2.6 M103 190e....maybe mid 20's on the highway. Good car & a good kid car nowadays. A little sluggish on acceleration with the a/c on, imo. Always wondered how the 2.3 felt with a/c running.

I drove over to Logansport to test drive the 190e. Its pretty rustfree with presentable light green metallic paint. The interior is decent. it shows 160,000 miles but speedo is inop. Clutch engages very low, accelerator action is very strange. 5 speed seems good. needs tires and shocks, air con inop (he told me last time it worked but denied it today) and the drivers side is caved in both doors and behind the back door a bit. He's asking 1500 but really the car is totaled and if everything was tip top would maybe be worth What, 5000? You'd def have that in it before finished.

An 85 2.3L 5-speed with 160-180K miles is more in the $2.5-3K range at best.

Most new Mercedes models won't get much better, what's a pretty sad achievement if you ask me.

Yes, but it's getting that with a 3.5L V6, not a 2.3L I4, and with lower emissions and more HP.

Maybe, but a C250 with a 4 cyl, 1.8 L still gets 25mpg combined.

In 2001, my ins co. totaled mine (144k well kept smoke silver) & paid me 7,000, which I considered fair.

Well it really all comes down to condition doesn't it? I'd be willing to pay 7 for a really nice one with a diesel and five speed.
Do any of the 190s have manual AC like a 240?

All the US W201 had the Tempmatic AC system. There were a handful of OM engined ones with manual transmissions. A $7K budget could get you the later W124 or potentially a post 97 C240 Kompressor |

I like the 124s but the ac systems can be salty to fix. I guess I am spoiled by the old manual 123 systems.

I had a 91 2.3 that only had 60k on it when I bought it. (1998-2001) I got in the low 20's at best on the freeway. I always ran 80mph tho. I got 18mpg around town. It was not the fastest car out there but I thought the 2.3 did great on the freeway She wanted to run 100 all day. I remember in hot ga summers she would always run a little hot with a/c on and I would get nervous if I ever got stuck in traffic...Great little car tho. Only issue I had in the 3 yrs I owned it was one bad shock and the leaky a/c. I had to charge it every 2 weeks in the summer. I traded it in with about 80k on it for a used Explorere Limited in 2001. They allowed me about $6k for it back then. I had looked long and hard for a nice 2.6 but out of the 3 I test drove and seriously considered all had bad oil leaks from what appeared to be the rear main.

My 87 190D gets a tad over 30mpg. The C240 wagon was getting 25 +/- @ 5% ethenol, dropped to 20-22 when they upped it to 10%. Two months ago a bunch of local stations began selling 91 octane, ethenol free gas; I am on my fifth tank full and the wagon has averagd 30.7 mpg on the last 4.
