Getting Alley/Stray/Feral Cats Fixed Cheap

Over the years at least 3 litters fo Cats have been born on My property. I used to leave them alone and they eventually went away.

Slightly over 10 years ago I found a Cat living in My old Truck (see Pic Baby Cat). I tried to ignore it but it kept getting skinnier and skinnier and I finally fed it and it became My Pet.

From the way it acted it evidently was a House Cat that someone abandoned. While this Female Cat has spent a lot of time outside it never got Pregnant.
I was happy having only one Cat.

Somewhere around June of last year an other Cat had Kittens under My House. Since the Kittens were so cute My Wife started Feeding them. (see Pic Momma after dropping the Kittens and the kittens eating).
Once you start feeding them they are not going to learn to Hunt for Food and if you abandon them they are likely to starve like was happening to My original Cat.

So of course they have been growing up over since that time.
I found out I had a lot to learn about Cats.

2 of the 5 kittens might have had the same Father but not the other 3 as the look so different. I found out that Cats are little Baby Making Machines and they don’t care if the Mate with Fathers, Sons, Brothers and so on; and they can continue to mate while that are pregnant.
So nature provided 1 Male Kitten and 3 Female Kittens and the Momma.
Several Months ago Momma got pregnant, followed by 2 of the other Females that only left one Female not pregnant.
So I had to do something or I was going to end up to my A** in Cats.

So I got on the internet and found that there are places that will fix Feral/Alley/Stray Cats they say for Free; but there was no local place that did that.
The Local Place charged less than $33 each; however, they cut off part of the Cats Ear to show that it has been Fixed.
I found that some People purposely Catch Feral Cats and have them fixed to decrease the Cat population.
But, they have some odd Rules. You need to get a Free Rental Trap from them. Like Autozone you Pay and get the Money Back when the Trap comes Back.

They told Me I could bring 2 Cats. As it turned out what the meant was that that the Clinic took only 2 Cats for the Whole Day! After that it was up to the Doc if they would do any more.

The place I went to was the Animal Car Center (Operated by the Golden State Humane Society) in Long Beach Ca. There is also one in Garden Grove Ca.

Note: I thought about buying a Trap from Harbor Freight but the user ratings show that only the expensive one will work. From what happened to Me I doubt if even the Expensive Trap will work in all Cases.
In trying to catch My Cats I caught a Big Tom Cat that had been stealing Food. He fought and the Caged Rocked and when this Claws were spread out it looked like a 3 inch spread on them! A big strong Cat.

You can take your Pet there for regular Vet service but if you don’t have any immunization Records they won’t see your Pet until you have the immunizations done.

Also these Cats managed to come up with 2 Rats from somwhere. I had never seen any Rats where I live but I guess they are around; see the last pic. People complain about the Stray Cats but it makes you wonder how Rodents would be around without them.
I have seen them bring back Gophers, Mice and Rats so far.

I forgot to mention sinc Momma knew how to Hunt I just relocated Her to another area. I did this parly becaus Momma would go after My original Cat if I let here ou; to the extent that My Cat was scared to go out side.

That's what I was thinking. My 2nd wife was a cat nut, and was always bringing home pregnant cats, which I would get rid of at the pound weekly. It was a constant battle with her.

Because of my experience with her and all the danged cats, I really dislike the critters...I think they mate faster than rabbits.

Personally, I have a dog that loves the sound they make when he chews on them...it seems to keep the bastards out of my yard and from pissing on my porch. Once you have the smell of male cat urine on your porch carpet, you cant easily get rid of it.

LOL ...

My 84-year old mom is the queen at taming feral / stray cats. The pro's generally say it cannot be done, but she does it somehow. They run to her porch upon command, she pets them, and so forth. Of course, they want food and handouts in return. However, she started to get the cat population explosion also. So, the neighbors started to gently complain and the only real key was to systematically "grab" one at a time and take it to the shelter which offered free spaying/neutering. We called around and found a place which would do it for free if you made a "voluntary" contribution. Well, it was worth $5 bucks per cat. Right now, through whatever attrition nature provides, she only has 2 cats left. They have been at my parent's door for the last 7 or so years, so I am guessing in a few more years, they will all be gone. I believe the tally hit almost 20 cats at their height of power. But, once they started to get fixed, one or two would start to disappear here and there. A few became indoor cats I think, some got hit by cars, and who knows about the others. Removing the reproductive organs does in fact work in reducing the herd. My mom will smile knowing there's other folks out there who are generous to cats.

Also there is a Grade School in front of My House. If I fired a Gun and killed a Cat I would surely end up in Jail.

Besides I only kill what I eat

My Wife grew up on a Farm and volunteered to castrate the Male Cat.
I said no since we have no Pain Killers for the Cat.

Besides I think it is a bad precedent to have My Wife to get used to castrating things; who know what that might lead to!

Years ago My long time Neighbors bought some land out in the Boonies and moved there Living in a Mobile Home.

In that area Bob Cats routinely kill and eat Dobermans or German Shepherd left out at night. On top of that Coyotes will team up and do the same.

If I'm reading this correctly, you have a place locally that will neuter for 33 dollars. Yes? That's a good deal for tomcats and a smokin' deal if they charge the same for queens. Females require internal surgery, males don't.
They'll only do two at a time? Great. Do two at a time. The ear cut makes sense, and won't hurt them. The average intact tom gets his ears ripped up fighting in no time anyhow.
Feral kittens can be socialized once removed from their wild mothers fairly easily. There may be rescue organizations in your area. They have volunteer foster people who take in the kittens, socialize them and get them ready for adoption.
As far as traps go, Havahart is the only choice in my opinion. You might call your local state game and fish department. They'll often have traps to loan out to people who are having issues with nuisance wildlife.
Cats become trapsmart real fast. One cat watches another fall for a trap, you 'll never get that first one anywhere near a trap. It's my opinion that anyone who elects to feed a feral cat has the obligation to see that the animal is neutered, or eliminated.

I was confused about How many Cats. The Clinic will only Fix 2 Feral Cats each pre Day (if they do more it is at the descression of the Vet). As an example this means if 3 People bring in 1 Cat to be fixed. The first 2 people will for sure get their Cats Fixed. The 3rd Person has to wait and see if the Doctor will accept another Cat.
The above happend to Me the first time I went. I was #3; I wated for about an hour till the Vet came in and they took the Cat.

The Lady that was a head of Me with 2 Cats told Me what to do for the Trap Shy Cats. She said to use Tuna with Oil as a bait. That worked for Me also as I have one Cat that runs from Me all of the Time and it was only walking around the Trap when I put the regular food in. Also don't feed them so they are hungry enough to go in the Trap. (The Cat that runs from Me I call Runner. It had gotten traped inside of My Van for 1-1/2 days and I did not know it till I opened the Door. It also managed to Kill a Battery as in trying to get out it turned on the Parking Lights.)

As long as you make sure to tell them they are Farel Cats the charge is less than $33.
The 2 Cats that I have taken so far were Female and both of them were Pregnant.
So the charge is the same for Male or Female and pregnant Females. A regular Vet charges more if the Cat is pregnant.

The also do the same for Dogs but I don't know if the Charge is the same.

On the Internet there was a claim that there is places that will do the fixing for free. But, as I said I picked the closest one to Me and was OK with the $33.
However, it uses up some time as you need to get there before 8am and be back to pick the Cat up 2-4pm and they only do the Feral Animals M-F but that is in My area.

I hate cats, I have a house now that I tore down and the previous POS house was a cat house. As a result I have a handful of strays that keep coming around the job site. I don't want them pissing in the new house so I have given a few of them the boot.

My plumbers dog was in heaven though, he LOVES cats!
