A good BMW forum?

I like this forum, nice folk. Anything on par in the BMW world? Google is not helping at all, seems fragmented. I think I am running into areas with my new 7 series that will need some additional advice.

I got one for my b-day. 1992. There is a loud engine tick, localized. Pretty sure a rocker came off or a spring snapped/came out. Maybe even a clogged oiler hole. I am about 30 minutes of work from having the valve covers off to be sure. Just mentioning this in case its related to the issues I have a question on. The car does have plenty of power though.

When I opened up the oil fill cap, its white and there are drops of clear water on the lip inside. The dip stick is clean though. I have yet to drain the oil which will tell me for sure if there is coolant issues. But I was wondering were coolant could get into the oil besides head gaskets. On the Ford 4.6L, for example, the oil filter housing gasket can go bad and there can be cross contamination. As for the coolant, I did dip in a clean bright material and it was clean of any oil. No film floating on top at all visible either. So it appears if there is coolant in the oil, its a one-way leak.

Also the car has pretty much sat for over two year. Ran occasionally. The previous owner did add some SeaFoam to the oil to see if it wold clear up the tick. It did not and was thus parked and retired until now.

Any thoughts? The idea of pulling heads is not appealing.

Is it possible that it could be condensation? I would second bimmerforum.

one thing i noticed in my dads shop.every and i mean every ford we had in that had to have the valve covers pulled, were full of a whitish/brown snot on the insides of the valve covers.also this was made worse if they used pennzoil.also fords had an uncany knack in the winter of freezing up the pcv valve and would blow oil out the weakest link, which more often then not was the rear main seal.i can't say that i have ever seen a bmw with this issue but my guess would also be condensation.the thing needs to be driven.as in "the ultimate driving machine"which i really thought my 96 740il was.damn i miss that car!

Maybe it is. Owner never noticed the white stuff before. I guess draining the oil will be the tell-all on this. Fingers crossed!

And thanks for the Ford reminder. I now recall working on my 73 and 79 Mark Series. I remember white-ish build up in the valve covers. Not much, but some indeed.

Was it parked because of tick? I'd venture a guess while it was sitting a while a lifter collapsed and clogged up. Best thing you can do is change the oil, seafoam or whatever treatment you like to use, and take it on a nice highway drive. No reason to pull the valve cover off yet.

That is what was tried. The loud tick, that squeaks at times, was there and a BMW mechanic said they could take it all apart or the previous owner could try SeaFoam before the next oil change. It did not help and he did not want to do any more harm, so it sat.

And I only have a little more work to pull the covers anyway.

Well good news I think.

Got the valve cover off. Only a slight white slime by the PCV valve opening. Not much at all. Rest of cover was clean and the cam galley had no signs of water/coolant. I would think some white/foam would have been there. So at this time I am going to clean up the stuff and see if it comes back.

The ticking on the other hand...
When I pulled the cover I expected a broken head bolt, spring, rocker off, etc. Nothing. As I focused back I found the issue. The forward most banjo bolt for the oiler tube was nearly out! The second one was not tight at all. The other two seemed okay. I am surprised that there are no copper washers on these. Should there be ones between the bolt and tube seating? The cams show very minimal, if any, surface damage. But I will have to pull the cam tower caps to see how the bushing really look. From looking through the banjo bolts they appear okay.

And to top things off, the oiler tubes have several clogged ports. That may have in fact helped push more oil to the front of the tube.

The oiler bolt should have a sealing washer on it.

Thanks, I will take a look. The link is for a E38, I have an E32. Seems factory did not call for one but I have some ideas.

Tomorrow I am pulling the cams & lifters. I will then order faulty lifters and new stem seals.

Needs new cams. One side is in very good shape. Some slight wear, but nothing bad. The other valve cover that I removed this morning showed the front and rear banjo bolt was not attached. Since oil feeds from the rear (I think) it starved. Major cam damage.

Really temped to to pull the heads now. Good times and off to the BMW forums!
