Where's Hell's Half Acre...Bonehead?

Was it West Virginia, or just Virginia?

Hell's Half Acre was a name given to any gambling/vice center in any old west town. The first recorded use of the name was in Fort Worth, Texas, but it was a term in common use among the drifters and gamblers of the era. It was also a place where town fathers were known to gather to 'keep an eye' on the scandalous behavior.

A funny story.....

A fire swept through Hell's Half Acre in Fort Worth one night and about one hundred 'Soiled Doves' died in the fire. Since all of these women were considered outcasts from their families there was no one to claim the remains, so the City had to make a decision as to where to bury them.

The City has a cemetery where only the finest people were buried, and there was one section reserved for only the leaders of the community. The City decided to bury the girls remains among the graves of these city leaders. A Pastor that spoke at the mass burial said the logic was, "As they were always together in life so shall they be in death."

Or are you referring to the hazard on #7 at Pine Valley?

Funny thing about those from WV...If a couple from there gets a divorce, they are still legally brother and sister.

Prescott, Arizona

The old red light district in Prescott Arizona was called Hell's Half Acre back before the turn of the century. It was burned down before 1910 when a local minister set fire to the row of whore's cribs and the flagration spread to the entire Whiskey Row district. The townfolk wetted down the rest of the town to fight the fire but did nothing to stop the fire in the row,

Prescott was home to Fort Prescott, and among one of the locals was Fiorello LaGuardia, later a reform Mayor of New York City (he banned pinball machines and slot machines and did his best to close the brothels that lined the shipping piers on the Hudson and East River in Manattan and Brooklyn.

I did a two week Annual Training in the vicinity of Beckley, WV a couple years ago. People who haven't been to WV aren't missing anything.

Whiskey Row burned again recently, but they are rebuilding. I used to frequent Matt's Saloon in younger days before it became all touristy.

I lived in Prescott for a half-year or so back in 97/98. It was all about the transplanted Californians then. Heard Billy Jack stories but never heard about this subject. I spent most of my time in rubber boots out in the boonies playing gold-miner. Pretty places, piney woods, big boulders, mountain steams, old mining roads, stagecoach roads. I got stuck in the snow a couple times and thought I might die.

Bonehead was banned from here several years ago for being a DB on OD. He's able to return if he chooses. However, his behavior hasn't changed one whit.

German Star lives over at BW..........returns here every so often. Larry has a new name here now and he posts every day. Hattie is still around, although he's currently MB less.

Many of those from the past have moved on........sad to say.
