surf fishing on Pensacola beach

Yesterday afternoon my son and three grandsons all went surf fishing. We used shrimp on one pole and cut baitfish on the other. We each caught a devil ray of about eight or ten pounds and 30" wingspan and I caught a 30" smooth dogfish shark. We fished til we could no longer see to operate, then headed home.

My son was determined to clean the shark so we can eat it and found a video of how to do it. the sharkskin is perhaps the most strong material I have ever observed. it is the thickness of latex gloves with about a hundred times the tinsel strength. Getting the skin off was an extreme chore and there are no bones to speak of just a backbone. after a half hour struggle he got it clean. It is now soaking in salty lemony water for eating sometime today.

It was a lot of fun!

The grandsons actually did not fish but amused themselves in the sand.

Sounds like a great time fishing!! Surf casting is a really fun and active way of fishing.

Always loved eating shark, but they say you should limit your intake because of the mercury build up...
Probably the little ones are a little safer.

Sounds like fun.

I'd soak 20 minutes in lemon juice, then another 20-40 minutes in milk. Milk dissolves the uric acid crystals.

Beer batter them and fry...

Not that there is any fault on the part of the OP, but I read that nearly 100 million sharks are killed each year, mostly for their fins.

100 Million Sharks Killed Each Year : Discovery News

It amounts to another entire family or is it phylum, or species - i get lost in the terms - that is being hunted to extinction.

Think of how we would be over-run by them if they weren't killed....

The breed we caught is not protected nor scarce. We threw away the fins!

dogfish sharks are not that special. If it was a black tip shark or a hammer head.. then we might have issues

If not for brave fisherpeople the oceans would be filled with nothing but scary sharks. We have a moral obligation to kill them early and often.
Seriously, sounds like fun. The best surf casting I've ever had was fishing for Pogies (Surf Perch) on the WA coast. Trouble is the water was cold as heck and I had to wear chest waders. You don't want to get hit by a wave and knocked over and have your waders fill up. Don't ask how I know.
I was hitting a fish on every cast for about an hour then suddenly they were gone. About 20 feet away from me in the water this dog-looking long whiskered head popped up. The seal and I looked at each other and I couldn't help wondering if we weren't both thinking the same thing. "So YOU'RE why the fish are gone!!"

Today we took out my Dad's old aluminum 13' boat with my Father in law's 6 hp johnson from the sixties. The old motor ran like a clock after cleaning the tank a bit and the plugs after sitting for about 16 years.

We went out for a ride, taking the whole family then went out and worked the shoreline for a few miles with no luck. We trolled on the way back and got a hit from an Osprey who stole the rubber bait. I told my son to reel him in so we could cut the line as short as possible. But the bird broke the 30# test and we really don't know how long it was trailing. We hope it will not be hurt by the mishap.

When we got back to the house my Daughter in law had the shark cooked up from yesterday. We ate it with great relish.

I'll be heading home tomorrow early.

If not for the "no-see-ums" I could get used to living here.

Did you buy a license to fish? Did you know the harvest of spiny dogfish is illegal? Did those things even cross your mind?

All harvest of Largetooth Sawfish, Smalltooth Sawfish, Spiny Dogfish, Manta Ray and Spotted Eagle Ray is also prohibited.

When I read elchivito's post, I thought it was a tongue-in-cheek response to this:
