Tinsel. It's not just for decoration.

We went out for a ride, taking the whole family then went out and worked the shoreline for a few miles with no luck. We trolled on the way back and got a hit from an Osprey who stole the rubber bait. I told my son to reel him in so we could cut the line as short as possible. But the bird broke the 30# test and we really don't know how long it was trailing. We hope it will not be hurt by the mishap.

When we got back to the house my Daughter in law had the shark cooked up from yesterday. We ate it with great relish.

I'll be heading home tomorrow early.

If not for the "no-see-ums" I could get used to living here.
Sounds great, Tom! (sans the osprey event)

Visit in June/July?August and it won't just be the no-see-ums.

Didn't catch your tongue in cheek- sorry.

We have enough ****-***** fishing here in FL who don't even bother to check the laws- much less obey them if they find out they are breaking them. Those ******* make it far tougher on those that do follow the laws because FL/FWS LEO have to deal with them and then assume most all are ignorant law breakers. As a fishing professional I see it often.

I'm sure you do. But don't feel rained on. I think it's common everywhere. Nearly every time I go fishing I find the evidence left behind by other fishermen that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are first class pigs and second class citizens. The same goes for sport shooters. Poached game out of season, broken beer bottle "targets" glittering in the desert sun, brass everywhere.
It's too bad fishing and hunting licenses don't include a basic common sense test.
The fellow who taught me to fish for surf Perch and dig Razor Clams up in WA is a state fish cop. He takes special pleasure in every bust of some idiot scofflaw and freely admits it.

All harvest of Largetooth Sawfish, Smalltooth Sawfish, Spiny Dogfish, Manta Ray and Spotted Eagle Ray is also prohibited.
I don't at all understand your attitude.

I bought a license. It was not a spiny dogfish it was a breed of shark which is legal to take. After researching it more at home we decided it was not a dogfish shark but another breed in the same family which is very similar, which I believe has the word smooth in its name. its mouth looks like a nurse shark.

I always do my best to obey the laws regarding fishing and or hunting. Salt water fishing is completely new to me though and the variety of fish is mind boggling compared to fresh water, which I am much more familiar with.

Yeah, I didn't think you caught a spiny dogfish. They are uncommon south of North Carolina. I've never seen one in the Northern Gulf of Mexico.

Also, don't think you were catching Devil Rays aka Manta Rays. They are typically filter feeders and do not eat shrimp off the bottom. You were probably catching sting rays or some other type of skate fish.

The bugs are not bad in the fall or summer when you get a southern breeze. A north wind will blow them on the beach along with the biting flies.

I just searched a bit and believe it must have been "lesser devil rays". It has the "horns" which protrude from each side of the head and come forward and curve around and down, traveled in a school, and leaped in a feeding action on a school of baitfish. By the mouth I don't think it was a manta.

X2

Tom- with this post I think you can see why people can be upset at fishermen who break the rules... and if you've never been salt water fishing before how can you tell what this fish is vs this fish?
Thank you for buying a license.

the first is also called a nurse shark which my son said was fair game. He has surf fished before and I counted on him to keep us legal.

The second fish does not appear to be a shark nor is found on the florida panhandle by the chart attached which you provided.

I don't understand why I find myself defending myself from an attack by you. I did nothing wrong but with no information you assumed much.

White fish.

Pretty generic white fleshed fish tasting.
