w211 ones
These are the w211 series E class models, made in what are Mercedes Benz' "dark" years of abolut 2000-2009 for pretty much all models save the R129 SL roadsters that were engineered earlier and first arrived at US dealers for the 1990 model year.

Actually, W211s are pretty good cars, with this being the Achilles heel of the car. There is a big thread on this over on MB world in the W211 AMG section. MB denies that there is any problem, while several owners reported issues.
My 03 had this problem while the PO had the car, and was replaced under warranty. Total cost is around $1200.

This problem isn't really news, especially to those of us in the MB community. The seals for the fuel level senders are known to leak with age. In rare cases the tanks develop small leaks as well. I'm guessing it has something to do with the plastic tank flexing due to pressure changes during purging. I'm not an engineer though, so we'll have to wait and see.
