There is a very interesting little hydroplane powered by a crosley engine here at the Park inn in the lobby. I checked it out yesterday. The crosley engine made about 80 hp it says. The crosly engine appears to have an ohc driven by a vertical bevel shaft off the rear of the crand and the head and cylinders appear to be integral bolting to the crankcase. It has a one barrell carb with an opening the size of a quarter or so.
The crosley engine was light enough that a really able guy could handle it with no equipment. I knew a guy that used one with a chain drive for his boat.. When he found the chains started to turn red he converted to a multipal belt pulleys transfer drive. . This was a long time ago on my paper route at the time. He also claimed he physically carried the engine home.

As I recall, the Crosley was the engine that was not a cast block. It was pieces of plate brazed together and sleeves put in place. I might be thinking of something else, but I think it was the Crosley that was made this way.

I remember seeing a few little Crosley station wagons around when I was a kid in the fifties. They were tiny.

This riverfront town/area sounds like a really neat place to me. I like what is described as the scene with river traffic and the quaintness and picturesque smallish river towns like this in the Midwest. I have a fondness for observing and poking around these types of riverfront towns.
when out on the road.

IMO; Many, many river towns became the places that time forgot as highways were built and trucks were employed as another means of transport, leaving the commerce that once was only served by river, OR railway, became wide-open with highways - thereby leaving many towns to die from lack of commerce and inhabitants. Such was progress in 20th Century America.

I believe the early crosleys were built up as you state, but the later ones had cast blocks and heads.

The engine in the boat looked like the one on the right except for no blower and a very small carb like on the green one. The green one is the one with the built up block. I understand the block weighed less than 15# and the whole engine 135# or so with 750cc. The one in the Madison boat is the version with cast iron block and head, like the silver one.

these engines found their way into midget race cars too and sports racing specials as they were very small and had good power for their size.
