Driving cross-country to Texas ...

starting tomorrow. I was offered $150k/yr to be director of technology services at Huntsville Prison four at least one year. Any recommendations where it's best to live in that part of TX? Also, what should be checked in an old W123 before taking it on a 1800-mile trip?

Huntsville is a nice town. Just to the east and north of it are sections with heavy woods. Still lots of pine trees, but also a few oaks here and there.

I would not consider anything to the south since that would put you into Houston traffic, although you would be going against the traffic if you worked normal hours. South of Conroe... Forget it, but Conroe is sorta' nice.

Before you looked around too much you should just check out Huntsville itself. To the east trees and creeks, to the west rolling hills and sparse trees.

All in all a pretty area, but read up on Fire Ants and how to deal with them. This comment is not meant to be a joke. The more you know about Fire Ants the better you will be able to deal with them and deal with them you will.

And don't make fun of the giant statue of Sam Houston. He really is well respected in those parts.

Perhaps all fairly frequent wear and tear items plus the fluid levels including the rear end. If the car has not been having frequent problems in local driving it is probably basically okay for the trip as long as the simple maintenance things have been covered. I might add a little lubricant to the rear outer cvs if the boots are still good. Thats if you never have before.

As far as the car goes... Check the rear end oil and make sure the tires in are good shape.

If your A/C is not working then get it fixed. You will need it there.

Put on a new set of wiper blades. It can rain like crazy in that part of the world.

By the way, which way are you coming from? Perhaps some of us can suggest a roadside attraction or two?

OOOpppppssssss! I just noticed you are in NYC.

Buy your beer in Texarkana. Most of east Texas is dry. I don't know about Huntsville.

Copy "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow" onto your iPod and listen to it in a continuous loop all the way there.

Move to The Woodlands, its a nice community and about 30 minutes from Huntsville. I'm from there and would recommend it to anyone. I would never recommend living in Huntsville. Its a college town, home to SamHouston State university.

Good luck

Looks like I caught a few live ones: happy 4/1 I'd actually love to visit TX, maybe even work there for a while, though my first love is still (and will always be) NYC. But working in a prison responsible for quite a few executions ... unless I were a chaplain or defense attorney, no thanks. Thought y'all knew me better. Same would go for Sing-Sing as well, come to think of it.

As far as living in a college town vs a master planned community, I'd generally take the former over the latter any day. Drunk fratbois don't faze me, and I don't really give a crap about the occasional 3 am party/disturbance. Really prefer the walkability and liveliness of many American college towns to sterile suBURPia.

Actually, nous sommes le 11 Germinal, année CCXXII (le 1er avril deux mil treize)

-2 for French civilization and the Napoleonic (Calendrier républicain) calendar, but a good try nonobstant.
