Found a 97 Porsche Boxster...

...for cheap!

$3k! It runs and drives, but has a few glitches with the soft top.

I'm thinking about getting it as a cheap summer beater! Any experience with these (other than the old saying "Nothing is more expensive than a cheap Porsche"???)

My uncle had one of those and it was the biggest POS he owned. I would steer clear.

Put it back where you found it.

I've driven those a lot, an old roommate had a '97 Boxster S. Had some problems, transmission was iffy and some other stuff. Never an issue with the engine. And a lot of fun, I really liked it, did 110mph where I wouldn't take any other car over 80mph.

For $3K, you can't go wrong.

Please do the experiment and let us know. It's one of the few Porsches I am attracted to.

I suspect you could go wrong, but the price of admission seems low. That's about what Saturns are going for now.

Ha ha, true.

$3K for a " chick car?" ;)

Gender boasting aside . . . Take it to a Porsche wrench turner and have it inspected, but of course you knew that.

Get creative, and go outside side the box.

Skippy Barber's or Bob Bondurant's track school would give you some good track school for $3,000, I would INVEST the $3,000 into THAT,

Then, go and buy a cheap beater from the next set of cars that got abandoned in long term parking, at the San Francisco Airport Auction - all decent cars that ran when parked, they do a "sweep" of those every few months; a little-known secret that OTHER SF airport employees do NOT want you to know, as it is a dirt cheap way to get a good car that ran fine when parked. Battery jump and a cut ignition key later and you are gone in your new-to-you summer beater. Keep it; or flip it after you get bored.

I was told that sometimes a Rolls Royce, Mercedes or other exotic gets swept up - some uber rich guy had to lewave the country FAST, being chased by the mafia or an IRS, he just jumped into his car, raced to the airport and dumped it in long term parking and flew away never to return.

It really happens. My landlady in San Francisco had a boyfriend who was employed by the City and County of San Francisco as a Plumber at SFO. That's how I found out.

Save your money and buy a Toyota.

Meh, you can't take it with you - so live a little.

The early water cooled motors had problems. The intermediate shaft bearing for one, engine seals another, both expensive to fix.

$3k is about right. They are all convertibles.

If the engine has been replaced, go for it. If not, be careful. Porsche had a silent recall that extended past the warranty time to replace blown engines. Which happened on most of them.

Been there, done that with a friend who had one. Otherwise they are simple cars to work on and a lot of fun in the summer.

Buying it is not the problem, the problem is deciding what to do at the first $3000 repair estimate.

My only comment is for 3000 you can get a pretty decent Miata. I always beat the Boxters at the autocross. They're about a foot wider than a Miata (it seems).

I'll say it again, get a woman!!!
