There are few places on the planet where there is absolutely no possibility of any assistance for any reason whatsoever. Whatever befalls you on that trip will require YOU to solve it yourself or pay the ultimate price.

The question that begs is whether those folks fully knew the risks that they accepted and chose to make that trip despite the risks............or whether they were largely ignorant of the risks?

If you make a climb and the statistics show that you've only got a 75% chance of coming back alive, who would proceed on such a basis? I'm not understanding that calculation.

There's some remote connections to the reasons you have for working on that Dodge van.

Is it better to die while challenging yourself to the limit or to die from a tedious and boring life?

Good point. There's a 100% of dying from a tedious and boring life.

I don’t have an answer to my question, but I spend a fair amount of time hiking in areas where my chance of rescue, were it needed, would be between slim and none. But I do sometimes carry a PLB in those instances as I’ve not become completely fatalistic about the prospects of recovery. Of course, as often as not i forget the PLB. Anywho I decided long ago that the enjoyment of the back country was enough for me to leave most security behind.

The folks who climb Everest and other peaks make the same kind of decisions. Of course, so do heroin addicts. Those who eat too much fried foods also make the same decision but are usually unaware that they can’t be rescued after a certain point.

That's silly. Climbing Everest is not the same as back-country hiking, shooting smack or lining your arteries with McRib grease and Crisco. Not all risks are equal, nor are the decisions that lead to taking those risks.

If I'm going to undertake (hehe) an activity which has a significant probability of death, it better involve speed....

I would sooner do a Heli-ski/BASE jump on Chamonix than risk death plodding up a hill....

Interesting that they published that story on Christmas Day....

There are plenty of adventures to be had on this earth that entail much less pointless danger than climbing Everest. Just in the Cascade Mountains of north/central WA state are some really challenging climbs that would cost far less to undertake and entail much less risk that your friends and family will be inwardly shaking their heads at your funeral.

Reminds me a bit of the crowd who's fondest ambition is to go to Mars where they will be trapped in a space about as big as an RV for the rest of their life.
