Anyone run a half marathon?

Some co-workers are planning on running a half marathon this coming fall, and I am thinking about training/joining them...

Anyone here ever run one? Advice?

Be careful what you eat and drink beforehand.

I've run dozens of organized halfs, a handful of full marathons and probably a hundred or more half marathon distance training runs. (Used to meet a group every Saturday morning to do 10 - 15 miles just for fun. Did this for the last 15 years until recently when my knees gave up on me.)

IMHO, any reasonably healthy person can run a half marathon if they're willing to invest the time. Five or six months is plenty of time to train.

There is a wealth of technical information available on the web and in books detailing what to do and what not to do in training for a race that is longer than you're currently running.

The only advice I'll offer is to commit yourself to train with a partner, or better yet, a group. You will find yourself lacking motivation one morning, and the thought of someone waiting for you to run is often enough to get you out of bed.

Copious amounts of blue colored drinks the night before will up your endurance.

If you are going to do this, you need to slowly work up to what you do. Worry about form, speed will come later, this strategy avoids injuries.

I used to run 42 miles/week, 6 miles a day.

Ran the 86 Detroit Free Press marathon and survived ok, went to work the next day.

When I lose some more weight, and get some more stamina, I will be out there trotting again.

Do research on eating, stretching, even a stamina building program from scandinavia called fartlek. Yes it sounds funny.

But like Clint Eastwood says, " A man's gotta know his limitations."

A half should not be a problem. You can complete one on 15 miles a week. Just make sure you increase your longer run every other week until you get to 10 miles. Two ten mile runs followed by a two week "rest" before the event should be fine.

Follow a regimented easy training schedule;.. if you over train, you WILL get an over-training injury, almost guaranteed.
Then you are very sorry you over trained & overdid it because will be sidelined while your buddies are still training.
It is best to try some 5k races and 10k to get the feel of a race.
But don't over do it.

Thanks all for the encouragement!

Right now my "free runs" are somewhere between 3-4 miles... I know its not far, but at the same time, its not a "walk in the park".... I'm going to talk to a few people that I work with to see if/when they run, and to see if I can start going out with them.

I've run a couple, my advice:

Don't push yourself too hard in training.

If you can go on a test run and at the 9 mile mark you're feeling more bored than exhausted, you're in good enough shape.

Carry a water bottle with you, bring a snack for mile 8ish.

Put vaseline on your toes and be wary of abrasive shirts.

Ha!

Would those be the drinks that also impair judgement?

I've eaten a half of a Marathon Candy Bar, does that count?

Anybody who'd intentionally run 13 or 26 miles without being chased by something or someone lethal on purpose is judgement impaired to begin with. Might's well do it with a hangover.
I'm betting there'll be slots open next year in Boston.
