Pros and cons of upgrading the work truck...

My trim guy is going to be selling his truck at some point this year, probably in the next 2-3 months and I'll have the opportunity to buy it. Its pretty much identical to my truck except its 4 years newer and only has 15k on it, and looks and smells like new since he doesn't beat on it.

Pretty much like that one, here are the numbers:

2009 1500WT, with 15k on it, I can get it for around $11k.

Mine is a 2005 with 113k on it, and I think I can sell it for $5k-$6k. My truck has a leaky oil pan I'll have fixed if I keep it, and it needs another new steering rack. So about $800 in repairs for the rest of this year.

My other option is to sit tight for another couple of years and buy a 2014, but the one I want would be more money probably around $27k.

I'm thinking the 09 would be a good cheap way to get into a lower mileage truck for little more than my truck, than I can drive it until 100k when everything starts to break on these trucks and dump it.

Up to 100 you can nearly get by with nothing but oil changes, and shocks. Around 100 on my dodge I had to do front wheel bearings, brakes and if I had not rotated them front tires. Not towing would probably have allowed me to run 100K on all four tires, with all the towing I do the rears won't last 50 if not rotated. The shocks from factory were worthless pieces of dog crap that I would have changed with 1000 miles on them but no aftermarket were available until it was nearly three years old.

So Hattie is most likely talking about actual repairs vs routine maintenance.

With decent care the engine should run 300K I would think. I don't know about everything else on a chebby.

Yeah, and if it was a newer one it would have gone even farther. I bought a new Ford 4X4 in Nov '77, '78 model. I still have it and it hasn't even seen 100K miles yet. Problem is, most of it is off road and many really short hops on the place to feed, haul hay off the meadow, fix fence etc.,

Great looking truck Hat! I am also a regular cab fan.

This is a personal decision that only you can make. I expect that you take good care of your vehicles which translates to MANY miles left in your current truck. That said, sometimes it's not a pure money decision. If you like the newer truck better than the one you have, that is definitely a factor.

Good luck with your decision.

BTW, I was surprised at your comment about everything breaking at 100K. These days it seems that my vehicles are just getting broken in at that point. Today's vehicles, regardless of the manufacturer seem to run forever. Maybe you are unlucky.

The 2014 looks like crap in the interior. Where does chevy get their designers?

Well, with government involvement.... Beaureacrats don't make very good designers.

Take the upgrade for $5k.

Maybe it's the market, but I've seen early 2000 S10 pickups go for around 5k up here. 5k for a fullsize seems low

Not to mention the awful LEDs on the GMC version. Afterthought and a horrible one at that.

5k is the difference assuming he can sell his existing truck. New truck might be 11k ish, which still seems pretty decent for a truck with, 15k miles on it.

I like the much older chevy products, though I was a big fan of the one generation earlier body style personally of this truck. The new ones just seem excessively chunky

I recommend buying the 2009. I'm a fan of a regular cab and a 8' bed. Here's my '97 Ford
