Reel mower suggestions.

The gas lawn mower I have does not run anymore. I am guessing an issue with the carb. It's a craftsman that is about 16 yrs old.

Anyway, I only have a small front yard and I am tired of the noise, smell and over all PIA nature of a gas mower so I am looking at a push reel mower. Does anyone have any experience with one? I have read that Fiskars are decent. I also found some Husqvarna mowers. I know they make good gas stuff but no idea on their other stuff.

Any suggestions?

Electric is an option too. That's what we use. Gasoline is too much of a headache for a small lawn.

We have a Fiskars that is pretty good. It doesn't do well on taller and thicker grass (to be expected) so you have to keep on top of your mowing and do it regularly. Obviously there is no drive assist so although its fairly light, it does require effort to push, which is great exercise. If you have a rowhome or a pretty small yard, I would definitely recommend it. Beyond that its up to your time and effort vs. your yard.

Could that type of mower be used to top broccoli plants?

We picked up a Fiskars reel mower last year at a garage sale for cheap. I had the local lawnmower repair shop put a keen edge on it and it's great. Like was said, wet and tall grass are a pain and nearly impossible with one, but we noticed that the lawn looked healthier after a few weeks of using it.

We have a gas mower when it's needed, but we only used it three times last year. I repaired the switch on the electric last year as well. Come to think about it, I have too many lawnmowers...LOL

Ever thought about using one of those mowers on your gorilla looking arms?

I am looking for less complexity so electric is out. I have read good things about Fiskar but I live in the South and some things I have read said it does not do as well on thicker lawns of the south.

One article said that the American Bent mower with 7 blades (Fiskars have 5) is better for my area. I think I need to find a mower store that sells reel mowers.

Great move! A reel mower is basically a rolling pair of scissors. Each blade of grass is cut the same as if it had been cut with scissors. After you get one, pick up a cutting and look at where it is cut, then pick up one of your neighbors rotary cuttings, and unless he has a brand new, sharp blade, you will easily see the difference.

The exercise will do anyone good. The only thing seen as a downside by some people is that it leaves a stripe. Some people like this, and mow particular patterns with it.

As to the selection of one, its not as if you are buying outdoor power equipment, it's more like you are buying cutlery. The Fiskar is probably a good recommendation.

My Dad had a POWERED reel mower when I was very small and we always had the best looking lawn around. I pushed one for my Grandma sometimes, but was just too small at the time. If I had a small city lot and wanted a nice looking lawn, that's exactly what I would do.

Can't you find a subject we can argue about instead of all this practical stuff?

Let us know what you come up with and how it works out for you.

All the truly fine mowing is done by reel machines.
The way they lay the grass one way or the other gives the lighter or darker look.
I've had the pleasure (back when I was in school, and being a groundskeeper was a great summer job) of using some really fine reel mowers.
I would mow each swath of grass three times to achieve a real manicured look.
Awful lot of satisfaction can be found in mowing a lawn into a showpiece.

Of course, now that I am older and have more responsibilities, I shoot for 'good' in as short a time frame as possible.
Probably the fact that I'm not getting paid to mow the grass has a little to do with it as well...
Currently I use an excellent, made in USA, Walker zero turn rotary. It's great for those of us with, shall we say 'obstacles' in the yard.
