Mercedes S350 - What's the Point?

Ok, I have to admit that the W221 S350 seems like the perfect aspirational sedan - reasonably fast, exquisitely comfortable, and the efficiency of a diesel. But, throw a few options onto it and you've crossed into $100k territory. If you had $100k to spend on a car, would you spend it on a diesel sedan?

If you're spending $100k on a sedan, you're probably having some other poor schmuck drive you around in it. No need for sub 5s 0-60 times since you're not the one driving it.

Well, a diesel S-Class is boring!

Now a 335d on the other hand! Loads of fun!

I do, and no, I would not.

When you can afford to buy and drive what you want to, then you do just that.

My God some of the post in this thread....

The S350 Diesel: Yes I would buy one in a heartbeat. It is for people who want a large car with AWD and 33+mpg on the highway and not the major upkeep of say the V12. They do not want to drive a 15mpg V12 or 20mpg V8. Buying one brand new or any other car new is silly to me. In the event I was to buy a $100k sedan no a S350 would not be my first choice.
Now because one spends $100,000 on a S Class does not mean you have a driver. If you think most S Class owners get driven around by someone else then I have a bridge to sell you and if you think the S350D 4M is boring then so is the S550 4M as I can go on MBUSA build a S350D and it will have all the same options right down to looks. Only real difference is performance and mpg and ABC(S550 only)

I have seen the S350 used by limo companies in LA, with better mileage makes sense to me.

Correct! For limo companies and high end shuttle services it makes perfect sense. Less upkeep of a engine and better fuel economy.
I flew out to Boston to buy a new car about 3 months ago and the dealer picked me up at the airport in a S350D they used as a concierge vehicle. Splendid car it is and very quite even thou its a diesel. Hard to tell if your in the S550 or S350.

Almost NOBODY "buys" a new $100,000 - $130,000 S class in the USA or the UK.

They lease one, at lease end, dump it and lease another one, or some other expensive make.

Multimillionaires don't usually like to tie up their assets in a guaranteed depreciating asset such as a new $100,000+ automobile; likewise, corporations or private investors don't either.
