Texas plant that blew up carried $1M policy

Lets not put more regulations in place, those guys can't hardly pay their insurance premiens...

But I'm sure Obama will pony up the $100million, he's that kind of guy, so don't worry Texas.

I don't know details about what regulations those people were required to follow, but it's likely that there are already adequate laws and regulations on the books. As with many other things, it's simply a matter of enforcing the ones that already exist.

This is the typical politicians reaction. They use something like this to pass even more laws that due to their incompetence fail to be enforced. This allows them to have even more avenues to intrude on our lives.

It seems as if I remember hearing that they have failed to inspect this facility as they should have.

I rather have Perry pay for it.

Like the plant didn't intrude on their neighbors.

I haven't seen any evidence yet that he or any other politician in Washington don't think that it is their money. It's funny how easy it is for them to spend other people's money. More correctly, spend money that they borrow in the taxpayers name.

The plant intruded on their neighbors due to the governments incompetency. Agencies like those that are supposed to inspect dangerous operations are some of the few things that the govt is actually responsible for, since it has to do with public safety.

If it was due to the failure of a state agency that was responsible for the inspections, then you are absolutely correct.

So just to keep things simple lets blame the government for everything, like they did in communist Russia, no personal responsibility.

No, that's not my point. Although IF there were inspections that were supposed to be made and the govt was too incompetent to make them, they do have culpability. If they did fail to do inspections according to regulations, then they need to be following and enforcing the laws in place as opposed o adding more laws.

As tragic as it is, if there were no inspections glossed over, then it would probably warrant changing the law. The govt would have no culpability and thus should not shell out any money. If that is the case, the victims should divvy up whatever can be had from the owner of the plant and any parent companies. This would include personal possessions of the owners. That's a crappy deal for the victims, but as you say it's about personal responsibility.

Why even have the government charged with performing inspections? It's just more government intrusion on free enterprise.

Free enterprise that has to do with public safety. One of the few areas of business that the govt has any responsibility for inspecting.

I spoke with a customer of mine who's soon to be daughter in all lives in west. Zoning in Texas is a joke. The plant was there first and th town was built up around it. She said there were no zoning rules in the little city. So no one was there to say that only a complete dumb puck would build a school, nursing home and hospital all with in a 3,000 foot radius of a bomb.

Texas is all about business and could care less about safety, employee rights and pollution .

$1,000,000.00 liability coverage seems about right, given the low overall risk of the past. It was likely a low margin industry, and given Texas' lawsuit reform, it doesn't pay to even insure in many cases.

They'll just file for bankruptcy protection anyway, under the law.

A $500,000.00 liability policy is all one needs to open with sufficient coverage. The risks of losing any assets is far, far less than having to pay the exorbitant insurance policy premiums.

So then, you'd agree that private industry needs to be regulated in the public interest?
