Geez! What a horrible way to go!

I think I'd have just let go.

Rock climber with hundreds of bee stings is found dead

I have often wondered about encountering snakes and such on the finger holds...never thought of bees.

He was found in rappelling gear. Seems like he could have quickly rappelled down. Wonder if these were African Killer Bees. They have made it into southern Arizona, right? Dog was dead too. Seems like the dog could have gotten away even easier.

You don't want to be flying an airplane and deal with even ONE bee. BTDT. You just gotta take the sting if it happens. I was lucky and didn't fight with him, but got on the ground without a sting.

I have a friend who has kept bees for years. He explained to me that "African Killer Bees" aren't a distinct type of bee. It's a genetic variation originally spread by bees imported into Africa that cross bred with domestic and wild honey bees. Gradually the genetic variation moved north. Bees with this mutation are more properly called Africanized honey bees. Aggression is a side effect; they were originally imported because they're very heavy honey producers. Beekeepers love them.
I remember in the 90s seeing blue boxes hanging in Mesquite trees throughout Sonora and southern AZ. Bee traps, looking for evidence of Africanization in local bee populations. My friend claims virtually all wild populations in the western states are Africanized and not dangerous unless some hapless person crosses the magic line and the bees decide their nest is threatened.
I'm allergic to bees and wasps. I don't hike, boat or ride without my trusty Epi-pen.

Surely you mean imported "from" Africa?

We used to have people killed by bee swarms back in SA every now and then but it was really infrequent. It seems more prevalent here though. Almost seems like the mutation has become more severe here than it was back in Africa.

Same here. I got 27 yellow jacket stings last summer when I ran the mover over their nest. Thought nothing of it until a day later when I swelled up like a pumpkin. Now I get to carry the Epi-pen all Summer...

We have wild honey bees in the siding of the garage. They are the more mellow ones and do not care if you are directly under their entrance. It is amazing to watch the little suckers go about their business...

Okay, how many people knew I was a beekeeper in a previous life? Just, so you know, you shouldn't attempt this on a warm, rainy day. Bees are much easily irritated when they aren't out in the "field" collecting pollen and nectar.

If you ever do get stung, get out of there --- little known fact: Honey Bee stings leave the stinger and venom sack and the venom keeps pumping into you. Don't try to "squeeze" it because that will give you a full doze: think of pushing the hypodermic needle plunger. You want to quickly scrape the stinger out and then cover up the scent. The scent from the sting atracks other bees. The bee that stung you goes back and excites the rest.

If you ever have to use that Epi-pen, don't decide all is well afterwards and go about your business. Get to an ER anyhow. You can have a recurrent reaction some time later after the epi wears off and it can be even worse. I had to use mine once on an extended river trip in Utah and was unable to go to the hospital. After the epi wore off I just dosed myself with Benadryl the rest of the day in case. Nothing happened but boy was I relaxed, somebody else had to row.

In the 1970's My Grandpa-in-law kept bees; he told us to stay away from one particular hive because they were very aggressive.(and they were)
I guess hives have distinct personalities.
