looking at a 89 300se
The car looks good from the outside and inside but the engine leaks oil and there is vibration when going over 45 to 50 m.p.h.
He has replaced o2 sensor, exhaust, Alternator, shocks, brakes. He says it needs a tuneup and a windshield. Car has 165k miles and runs ok but i did not get the floaty feeling after letting go of the gas pedal. The car tends to want to slow down. I am always used to the feeling you get when using synthetic oil and the car wants to keep moving. He is asking 6500. and has not changed the timing chain. Is the timing chain important on the six cylinders and how expensive can it be to repair the leak in the engine. I like the car but feel ify about the engine and tranny. I did not take it over 60m.p.h. thanks for the replys. Bedros Last edited by bdemir; 03-17-2002 at 12:43 PM. |

I have read many posts from Benzmac that the timing chains on the straight sixes rarely ever need to be changed.
The chains are short, and there apparently is a tensioner that keeps the chain tight. Do a search and I'm sure you'll find these posts.

It is an 89 model and the vibration seems to be coming from the whole car or the bottom of the seat if i remember correctly. I dont remember it coming only from the wheel it was definatly from the whole of the car because everyone could feel it. The leak seems to be coming from the middle of the engine i think. I did see oil coming from the top of the head and the there was a puddle of oil in the bottom body panel that is under the engine. These cars are nice where you can look down and see an oil leak right inside of the enigne where there is a body panel or a pan cover where your oil can collect. I also see oil leaks in the rear bottom near the transmission. I think its time to call a mechanic. I would like to know what something like this could cost to fix.
Thanks for the replys. Bedros |
