Oklahoma Tornadoes...my thoughts and prayers

Wow, the footage is incredible. My thoughts and prayers go out to the survivors and the grieving families of the deceased.

So far all the storms have gone about 60 miles to the north of me. The very bad storms that is.

It is raining like crazy here right now, but it is only a big storm and not spawning tornadoes.

Being retired I will likely check with the Red Cross here and see if they need any clean up help in Moore. They usually do and you wind up picking up stuff out of the streets and around cars where they can't use front end loaders. I would not be allowed in until the Police have finished looking for victims, but that is fine with me. The last thing the Police need is someone like me clogging up the streets while doing a trash clean up.

So far the real damage is in Moore and Shawnee. I don't get to Moore that much, but I am in Shawnee some due to some wrecking yards there. It is weird watching places you go by all the time being shown on TV all destroyed.

If you want to help then contact the Red Cross and be ready to give a few bucks. They can always use all the help they can get.

For the first time in my life, I heard the roar, growl, freight train noise of a Tornado yesterday. It was the strangest thing. The same thing that happened to Moore today should have happened to Wichita yesterday. The tornado touched down Southwest of town, looked well developed, and became rain wrapped/invisible. Everyone assumed the worst, even the weathermen were seeking shelter, but it passed right over. An obvious funnel chose not to touch down. Just harmlessly passed over.

My lot cars were damaged by the hail, as well as the lady's new ilx. All of my personal cars were in the garage.

Looking at the damage on screen Moore, this is the most destructive tornado I've ever seen. Cars piled atop eachother and major buildings like schools just leveled. That third grade class lost in the rubble of their school is just terrifying. Its pretty normal to see a standard stick and siding house to get leveled, but not major steel framed or cinder blocked, fully bricked buildings like schools. That takes some incredible strength.

I have seen and heard these things pass by within a few miles.

They sound like a train coming but when the 'train' reaches the point where you are hearing it there is no sound of the train passing. In other words, no Doppler Effect.

It is just a steady road, like a train caught in a time warp.

And then it is gone. You know you were close if you can smell the busted limbs and crushed up tree leaves. (This was when I lived WAYYYYY out in the country. In town you will see a lot of attic insulation blowing around.)

TxJake.... Is this similar to your experience?

By the way.... I was once installing an engine in my 1992 300D when one of these twisters passed by just a few miles away. I thought it was sort of nice since it cooled things down. Lots of wind but no rain where I was, but just a few miles to the north it was F-2 time.

There was a big field in Moore that was planted in some sort of crop. You could see where the twister passed though it since not only did it rip the crops out of the ground but it even left swirl marks in the dirt.

(Moore is packed with houses and businesses, but here and there are still what are fields waiting to be developed. The owners plant them with some easy to grow crop to obtain a Farming Tax Exemption on their property tax.)

Just awful. Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected.

Experiencing an F1 passing a 1/2 mile away was close enough for me. I can't even fathom what it's like to experience these monster tornadoes. Any loss of life is terrible, but the thought of those poor school kids and their families being separated at that time is heartbreaking. What a helpless feeling.

My prayers go out to all effected.

Today might be our day. The model shows severe activity for this afternoon along the river right where we are. I'm getting ready to hunker down.

Really a devastating sight - hopefully there isn't any of the typical political in-fighting like there was after Sandy, and those in need get the help they require to get on their feet again.

I saw something on the news the other day saying that most people in OK do not have basements due to the cost of building them. Seems that the soil is either too moist (mold and fungus as well as water pressure) or bedrock issues. Seems crazy to live in a tornado prone area without a basement but I guess if the are does not allow for it you are screwed. I think I'll pass on living in OK.

^^^^ I think I'll pass on living in Tornado Alley. Every spring I ask myself WHY??
I'd rather be By the Sea. At least we now get days of warning when the 'Canes come blowin'.....not minutes!.
