Let's talk about Facebook and activisim

I'm on FB, so please don't hate me! I don't want this to be a FB -bashing thing.

I don't know, but seeing people change their profile pic to the same-sex marriage logo (it's red with a pink equal sign) makes me just want to roll my eyes. Why do I find it annoying? Are these people actually going out there and doing something about it or are they just showing support, but to me the latter is all talk, no action. And what is up with people posting things about Monsanto and other issues. Makes me wonder if the posters are doing something about it or just wanting to look like they care and are worldly. And don't get me all riled up about people posting something that's been going viral online and posting it as if it were fact when it's actually fake.

Another thing I find really crude is people posting that they donated to a cause and say that we do too.

It's been so long since I've been on FB that I can't speak to what it's like now, but I used to change my avatar pic to different logos for Down syndrome/Trisomy 21 awareness (for my son) during certain periods when the groups were promoting something. We're fairly active in the groups but sometimes lending support through awareness are all that some folks can find time for and I don't fault them for it.

My issue wasn't with FB itself but with me spending far more time on it than I should so I quit cold turkey.

It gets people to go out and seek what you've posted, or if anything raises awareness for the cause. Perhaps its not the same as going and protesting but it shows that people are at least willing to take a position on whatever issue it is.

FWIW I never do that, I just wished everyone to have a very gay day.

I only post pictures of my dog on Facebook, if I ad a cat I would most likely post more frequently.

I understsand about that, SY. There are some FB friends who are directly affected by something, and they try to bring awareness to it. More power to them.

Maybe I'm being a bit cynical, but the people who, say, change their avatar to the red/pink same-sex marriage logo...do they know what it means? Do they live the life that some peopel live? Sure they're showing support, but, really, it means nothing if all they're doing is just having a logo as their avatar. I know it's probably hip to be a part of something or to show the world that you care and are progressive, but I think it's a bit ridiculous if you have no connection to the cause other than a post or a picture.

Felt about the same when yellow ribbon decals started popping up on SUVs around the country.

Perhaps someone close to them is in a gay relationship and they're showing their support?

That may be true, tbomachines, and I had thought about that before I posted my rant. Maybe I'm just being cynical or just annoyed by being confused with multiple people having the same avatar. I only have 64 friends, and I know 99.9 percent of them in real life. I'm not really judging them as I am the rest of the FB population. Usually when a friend posts something, his or her friend will post and you see their avatar and also get an idea of who they are. Usually people who are liberal will post and promote any liberal spew du jour, same with conservatives. I refrain from posting any political things. I may respond to them but never make a fuss about anything political.

How do you feel when people put up links to sign online petitions? I feel like I sign at least 10 petitions online a week and they always ask me to share them on facebook but I avoid fb like the plague.
