A question for ya Bot and the Swampster
 

I've got a grapefruit tree which produced the best grapefruit I ever tasted. Unfortunately we had hard freezes the last couple of years which were very rare for this neck of the wood. The tree was too large to cover from the frost so it took some major damage. It's surviving but doing very poorly.

Can I (probably not this year as it's too late in the season) graft from the tree onto a suitable root stock with any measure of success? The root stock it is on now is, I believe, a Trovita Sour Orange and I have a dwarf lemon tree on a some kind of "Dragon" root stock which would be the logical candidate. Not sure of it being a "dwarf" lemon whether it is even viable for the grapefruit due to size difference. Not the fruit but the fact the grapefruit is a large tree.

Sorry, Mike. Cool season turfgrasses and some gardening are the extent of my experience, trees are well outside my realm. The Bot may very well know the answer.

I did do some grafting in Woody Ornamentals 201 back in college but we were dealing with 1"-1.5" diameter trees. Just not sure about the viability of grafting larger stock although my initial thought was no.

I don't know what rootstock is compatible with grapefruit. What you wrote sounds reasonable but I dunno.

What good is this Internet thingy anyway? I ask the two guys I figure would know the best and one of them is only interested in "grass", the other guy thinks I'm reasonable. If'n it weren't for porn then I'd think the Internet was a sham!:D Guess it'd be safe to ask my oil and antifreeze questions here?

Nah, not global warming. Global old age forgetfulness.:o

We're just outside the grapefruit's comfort zone due to our elevation. The occasional "hard" freeze is normal. The occasional forgetting of things which need to be done seems to be becoming part of the "norm".

now, that right there is funny....:D

Hopefully you aren't dealing with citrus greening there yet? My trees have been hit and are in death spiral mode. Sux.

So far the only place in AZ the greening has appeared is in the Yuma area and that is suspected to be from trees recently transplanted from CA.
