Homebuilders Struggling to Find Workers

Good: greedy bastards...

""A lot of our workers are immigrants and they went back to their home countries," he said. "Our subcontractors can't get people; they can't start on time; they can't get things done on time.""

Just glad that Bennie's housing recovery hasn't come to NJ yet. People to meet, foreclosures to buy.

They don't have any trouble around here. Every town has a place where the illegal immigrants hang out in the morning waiting for the trucks to drive by picking up their day labor.

Yup. The pendulum swings. A lot of the skilled trades workers got fed up with the "You're lucky to have a job" attitude displayed by management over the last 20 years and moved on to other occupations. The older, experienced workers, who in former times were available/willing to teach the younger set coming into the trades, got fed up with hearing about the "new" way companies do business now are either no longer there or have no desire to help the company succeed.

There's a huge difference between someone who knows which end of a hammer hits the nail and a pro who can look at the plans and see what needs to be done.

You don't find a plumber who knows the codes standing in from of the Home Despot.

Tract housing? Built to code or if to code, decent standards? HAHAHAHA! Back-stab outlets wired through, so if one borks, the rest of the circuit goes down, plumbing embedded in the slab all the way where it's super easy to fix. LMMFAO!

I suspect that the only licensed plumber or electrician on those jobs is sitting in an office, rubber stamping stuff. Here's hoping for more cheap fork-losers in this area to put the tract builders out of business for a while.

You know their residency status just by looking at them? Joe Arpaio would hire you as a deputy in a second!

Produce prices are expected to rise in the coming year due to the lack of hands available for picking. I heard a news report from California, several farmers bemoaning the fact that so many good hands had gone back to Mexico and Central America. These fellows paid decent wages, 10-15 dollars an hour. They said they try to hire citizens but few apply and when hired, generally don't last. The work is too hard.

At $60/hr., including bennie costs, I'm sure that we can find some native-born U.S. citizens to take and hold on to these jobs. So just calculate the number of unskilled and semi-skilled man-hours it takes to build an "average" house (whatever "average" is) and add $45/man-hour to the cost of the house.

How true.

Anyone who thinks that the illegal immigrants have no more skill than running a weed eater are completely out of touch. There are LOTS of them that are not only bust ass all day long workers, but also SKILLED at many trades.

They are hungry and many of them are seriously smart. They are quick studies, and hungry to learn.
