BMW or Jag?
I know, neither are a Mercedes but I've been bit hard by both and there are a lot of smart people here who might have experience or an opinion.
Late 1980's BMW 635CSI, everything works except the speedometer. Interior is dirty but that can be fixed. Body and drivetrain are sound. 180k miles -or-- 1992 Jaguar XJ6 Vanden Plas. 50k miles, clean body, clean interior. Interior looks mint. The price on both are about the same. I've had a Jag before so I know what to expect. I think when it's time to move on to the next car it's going to be a lot easier to sell the BMW than the Jag. Thoughts? |

BMW! If you don't want it, let me know where it is. You can find a Jag to dump money in anytime.
The BMW is a 5 speed, right? Otherwise, what's the point? Any hopefully dirty means dirty and not ripped leather...

You lucky stiff. I went to lookat an e24 last week but it had been wrecked beyond my capabilty. There is an e28 i need to see that may be more practical. I dont mind leather with a patina at all. Try some leatherique on it.
And for gods sake put it in the garage. Those sharks dont like to be wet.

Nice looking car. Roadfly is a good BMW forum to learn all about it.

Nice car! I've loved those ever since I saw Avery Brooks driving one in "Spenser for Hire".

Equine excrement. The Jag may be unreliable, but the 635i's drivetrain is very solid, same deal as in the bulletproof e28 cars. |

If the Jag is a Series 3, I vote for that, but I don't think they sold Series 3s in the US beyond 87 or 88. If it's an XJ40, I'd wait for an X300 or X308 to come along.
The biggest regret is that you can't have one of each. Sixto 87 300D |

Jag Series 3 - thirsty (maybe 15 mpg), heavy, antiquated autotragic (3-speed, baby), with the reliability of a Yugo built on a Monday morning. It might be OK with a GM drivetrain dropped in

The sharknose 635csi is a beautiful looking coupe; and so is the Jaguar E-type coupe!
Both are breathtaking classics even today - judged by ANY reasonable measure... I am absolutely certain that the old Mercedes Benzes of that era though outshine them in build quality, longevity, and durability and safety in an accident. Though I have just (on May 25th) bought a new BMW 535i twin turbo with the "M" Sport package, ("M" everything except engine and transmission,) and it is a real performer with 300 hp, and with the M suspension you could probably throw it around like a prison beech in a cell block riot. I'd go for the sharknose in a second, though this one is the first BMW I have had, and never owned a Jaguar. I am pretty prejudiced though. But at 1,200 miles it sure is fun to drive. (Even to the dentist in San Francisco a week ago.) And at 49 years of driving, this new one is the most fun I have ever had with a car I bought!
