Hillbilly?

I must be at least an honorary hillbilly at least. The Mrs. rented us a cabin in the smokeys in the northwest corner of NC near Cherokee. the driveway is so steep you have to build up a head of steam a quarter of a mile before you get to it and drive past the entrance to the cabin and back down into the parking space!:P

Lovely scenery around here. Friendly folks too. Lovely daughter#3 and her family is joining us so we'll prolly be hiking and so forth to beat the band. I am in Sylva at the library (a most impressive faciility in the old County government building built on the tallest mini mountain in town) using the computer.

So I'll be a bit scarce around here for a week.

Nice place

I spent a month there back in the 90's doing a film about the Eastern Cherokee tribe and one of their elders (Walker Calhoun). This was before the casino and all the delevopment. Used to be a nice sleepy town on 441.
I thougght the smaller river towns (SoCo and others) that were nearby were really the old South.

Beautiful part of the country; I've spent quite a while on the NC side of the Cherohala. Unless things have changed, you might want to bring any beer/wine that you need, since it was a dry county and the closest such legal amenities were about 35-40 miles away.

Sounds perfect, Tom!

Enjoy the severing of your electronic umbilical cord. ;)

I was in Lake Lure a couple months back. I wonder what they do when it snows - the driveway up to the cabin we rented would be dangerous when it snowed.

If possible our driveway is steeper than that. We stopped just a little short of where we needed to be and the car just would not move, just dug a hole. With a little snow since its gravel I suppose no difference but with any significant amount there is no way without a full tracked vehicle with lugs on it!:P

Have a good time...sounds peaceful.

Re: BYOB, last year some friends from Arizona were tooling around and when they were in the bay area I went over to their motel to take them to dinner and drive them around some. Ed had a box in the back of his pickup with various 1.5L bottles of liquor and mixers. But that was for a different reason, naturally you can buy booze everywhere around here.

Still, I thought it pretty funny.

I took some pics today. We had a picnic by a rushing creek and walked over bridges made from a big log with a handrail. Then we walked up the appalacaian trail until I got too pooped. The kids carried on and I went back to the napping in the car Mrs. While walking back the maybe a mile alone I started thinking I might be hearing bears in the woods. That trail is relentlessly uphill where we were walking.

Wonderful views. We're going to try to find a good local place to eat supper and then will go back to the cabin where I'll prolly hang out with the kids for an hour or so in the warm tub.
