Yeah, I am, but I still hate the idea of leasing. Unless I'm the one leasing an apartment to someone, of course, and they're paying on time

My day-to-day commute would be ideal for something like this. And obtaining one would be within my means. But I too hate leases. And so it goes...

This makes for the 2nd outstanding offer for an electric vehicle. The Smart electric lease offer is about $50 less than the Fit but the Smart doesn’t include some of the extras, such as insurance and a home recharging station.
These are being heavily promoted. Selling or leasing a lot of them it’s how the manufacturer makes their money. What is the range of the Fit without a recharge? |

The CA event appears to be an opening salvo of sorts Fit EV is sold in California, Oregon, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, Rhode Island and Connecticut. The number of dealers offering it will expand from 36 to more than 200 by the end of June. http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2013/05/30/honda-fit-electric-car-ev-nissan-leaf/2373127/ |

Except that it isn't sold. They bend you over for $250/mo for a few years, then at the end you have nothing to show for it. Sucks for materialistic pigs like yours truly.

Thanks. A downside of the Smart is the ~ 65 mile range between charges.

65 miles isn't horrible, as long as it has decent charge times...

I don’t know if these will hold much value after a few years. Some gas versions dating to 2008 are on craigslist for about $7K. That’s a lot of depreciation. The various technologies are evolving rapidly and more and more will be coming on the market at increasingly competitive prices. Honda is clearly increasing their distributions and are price/feature competitive. They won’t be alone. Anywho I predict the market will be crushed with used electric vehicles in a few years all while next generation ones coming out the door for $200 or maybe less a month. It might be a practical model for this kind of vehicle. Daimler has a subsidiary named Car2go that has brought what seems like a billion Smart vehicles to the local streets, which Car2go rents by the minute. They are an infestation. As Smart started to produce electric vehicles, Car2go started rolling them out as fleets in parts of Europe. The US can’t be far behind. And then there’s the part where fuel cost is around 1/4 of the cost of a dyno-mobile. That effectively takes a bite out of the lease payment, compared to the regular “bent over” at the filling station. |

You’re right, it isn’t horrible. For me it’s not enough for a drive I do regularly. And at least this week there is no filling station where it would be ideal. In a few weeks or moths, that may change.

Considering that the MSRP in 2008 was about $12k, if 2008 Fits are going for $7k used, $5k value loss over 5 years equals $1000/yr depreciation. Not so horrible.

I was referring to the 2008 Smart 42 gasser. I though they sold for much more than $12k in 2008. I don't know and a quick search didn't find me an original msrp.
