Remembering Medgar Evers

Shortly after midnight, 50 years ago today Medgar Evers was murdered by racists. It took 30 years to convict his killers.
One of my personal heroes.

Rest in Peace Sgt. Evers. Those in the vanguard are the first to fall.
Medgar Wiley Evers, Sergeant, United States Army

T-AKE 13
USNS Medgar Evers (T-AKE 13)

In June 1963, I doubt I paid much attention to his murder. I was struggling with passing the NY State Regents' HS physics exam. (I didn't.)

This was one of major events that lit the fuse that blew the lid off the next decade.

In `65 tension was running high at my high school
There was a lot of fights between the black and white
There was nothing you could do
Two cars at a light on a saturday night in the back seat there was a gun
Words were passed in a shotgun blast
Troubled times had come to my hometown

Indeed.

I learned precious little about him in school (I'm 43), in fact I can't say that I recall anything about him from those elementary through high school years.

I would hope current history lessons pay him the due he so deserves!

Im 47 and did not learn anything about him or much of anything else that did not show the US in a favorite light. Never learned much about what happened with Native Americans, slaves, women, Irish, Italians .... etc. When I went to college and started to take history cpassed dedicated to these groups did I learn more about what happened to them. I can only hope schools have changed but some how I doubt it. Especially in light of the power that TX has with curriculum.
