Audi Q5 glass breakage
Neighbor has a 2013 Audi Q5 about a month old. It was parked behind her house yesterday when it was 100 degrees. Her friend gets in it to bring it around to the front of the house to put their luggage in it. When she closes the driver's door, the rear hatch glass splinters on to the floor. Anyone heard of this happening before? I know Audi has had recalls on their 2012 sunroof glass breaking in extreme temperatures. No evidence glass was hit by anything. Neighbor paid $1300 for roadside assistance with the car. When she called they told her to get some garbage bags and tape it up. She wasn't happy with that advice. Audi eventually sent a tow truck to pick it up.

It was drivable -- unless it was pouring, why did she need assistance?

She was leaving the country on an airplane.

I had a back window shatter on a Jeep of mine that had been cooking in the summer sun. I assumed it had been vandalized but the glass guy said it was due to the high temps and the different layers of the glass cooling at different rates.

It happens, and I'd be pissed at their roadside.
MB would have come and picked it right up.

Audi refuses to repair it. Says it was vandalized. No evidence of vandalism at all.

If she was present when it let go there is no real issue. Defect of design, manufacture or glass supplier.

Her friend got in the car and as she shut the door, it let go.

It is possible that the glass had been damaged by some sort of vandal like activity, ie; BB gun, stone chip, and the damage wasn't noticed until the entire glass gave way.
Though I have no idea how one would prove it one way or the other. Seems Audi ought to cover it just to keep customer satisfaction favorable. MV |

Possible but no evidence.

That's the thing, there's no evidence either way. The arguement could be made that glass doesn't just break by itself, so there must have been some sort of outside influence, which would be non-warrantable. I'd be surprised that Audi wanted to go that route, as it's bad for customer relations, but I'm sure they get that sort of thing all the time. I know we did when I was at a dealer.

Warranty Issue
She should call the Regional Rep and get them involved. this is clearly a warranty issue. I have seen the same on other cars with glass moonroofs in sxtreme heat and a sudden pressure change causing the glass to fail.
Call AUDI HQ and get a Regional Rep involved. Do not take no for an answer. In addition she should make sure AUDI knows that their Roadside Assistance program is BS. I have a new Hyundai and got an instant response on a warranty issue when the starter went bad after 2 months. RA showed up, flatbedded the car to the dealership, there was a TSB out on the issue/ I was given a loaner and had my ride back in 24 hrs. She paid $1300 to be insulted by AUDI NA. Post the issue on an AUDI blog page and direct them to it, they don't want pissed off customers. |

Given the way Audi builds their cars, its no surprise they're not interested in retaining customers with good service either.

And their service is miserable as well. You can never own one without a warranty...........and even with the warranty, they manage to nickle and dime the customer to death. |

That's surprising. BMW bends over backwards for the first few years.
