Question Have you ever bought a car and junk it soon afterwards??

This is what I want to do. Buy a junk, or close to junk, car. Strip the good parts and sell to JY afterwards. The car will not be registered. Would there be a problem with the JY if the registration is not in my name but all signed off?

I've done it a few times - but I usually wind up completely stripping the car and chopping it up so that it will all fit into the bed of my truck.

This what I'm doing with my 300D. The yard will need you to sign over a title, which will mean going through the DMV/RMV/BMV and getting killed in the process.

They only require a title if the shell is in one-ish piece.

A bunch of chunks - they don't bat an eye. Though they do have a 10 day hold for "scrap"...

Thanks for clarifying -- I meant that if you try to take a whole shell to a scrapper, they will want a title, but that if you bring it in chunks, they don't care. I don't think that Massachusetts has a ten-day hold, either .

Once...

A total POS Cadillac - thank God they took it off my hands. Worst POS I ever owned......

They never asked for the title, nor did I offer it. The car was going to be dismantled in a high school auto shop setting. I kept the tires and the battery, subsequently using them on other cars at the time.

I see you are also in San Diego.

I just went through this here.
As mentioned the junk yards require a title.

If you don't have the title you can leave it on the street and call the city's abandoned car department (not correct name but you get the idea) and they will tow it away free of charge very quickly.

If the "abandoned" car is on your property it is a much longer process.
I just did this (without title) recently with a 240D.
I stripped most everything off the car including windows, differential, axles, engine, transmission, chrome...
I put 4x4 blocks between the swing arms and the bump stops so it would roll, pushed the shell onto the street and called the city.

Within two hours the car was gone.

.

What I meant is that I have the tittle signed off by the previous owner but it is NOT in my name. Would it pose any problem with the JY? Would they try to match title with my CA driver license before they take the car? I am just asking if I ever do it.

I had one of those people who buy junk cars buy my car with no title. They had no problem finding a place to junk it.

your name doesn't have to be on the title typically. Ive done this a bunch of times, that there is a title is important based on the state, but it was never an issue selling the vehicle to a junkyard without it being in my name.

Call a local junkyard and make sure id say.

ditto.

"A" title is sufficient, no need for it to be in my name as long as the titled owner signed it. Done this dozens of times without issue.

They'll probably check the police registry of stolen cars -- as long as it hasn't been reported stolen, you'll be OK.
