how to remove an exchange account from Outlook 2007

The wifey's Win XP Pro PC has Outlook configured for an Exchange account. The account no longer exists on the Exchange server but Outlook can't get over it to the point that it won't launch. I know Outlook 2007 will run with only POP and.or IMAP accounts. When I try Control Panel -> Mail -> Email Accounts -> Microsoft Exchange -> Remove, it says I have to make some change to an account setting. How do I make any changes if I can't get into Outlook? Is there a[nother] back door to deleting the Exchange account from Outlook?

Thanks,
Sixto

Her login account (on the PC) may not have administrative privileges. Try logging in as administrator, blank password, going to Control Panel, Users, and changing her account type to administrator.

If that doesn't work, you may need to use a password reset disk to make the administrator password blank and try again.

Something like this one:
Offline Windows Password & Registry Editor

Go to the windows control panel, and then to the Mail applet. From there you can remove the account.

That or go into account settings, accounts, and then select the account to delete.

May finally need to delete the two outlook data files for that exchange account also. Outlook has a difficult time ignoring them. Search dot ost and dot pst.

Oops, it's Win 7 Pro. I go to control panel -> mail and remove the Exchange account. It responds with something like "you must go to account settings and change the destination of local files." I see no account settings option in control panel. If it's in the Outlook app, it says it won't start Outlook unless there's a connection to the Exchange server. Sigh.

Deleting the .ost file, there was only one, didn't help. I didn't find any .pst files.

Out of frustration, I uninstalled Office 2007 and it's reinstalling now. Who wants to bet Win 7 won't forget the previous Exchange parameters?

Ha! I found the answer here - How to delete Microsoft Exchange from my email account list? - Microsoft Community . It was the user profile I had to delete. It's humming along Exchange-less now. Thanks!

It will still remember.

I believe the Pst file stores your exchange data. Ost file is the mail.

Exchange data is stored in a bunch of files. Both .pst and .ost are calendar, contacts, mail, notes, etc. Only difference is that .ost is for an Exchange account, .pst is for everything else (POP, IMAP, archives, etc).
