I have had the honor to be in attendence when a number of friends and co workers received their citizenship in a ceremony in New York City. They were dressed in their best clothes, the ladies wearing rinestone USA Flag pins and the men wearing USA Flags in their lapels that I gave to them . The final phase is the assembly of new americans singing the "Star Spangled Banner"...it always brings a tear to my eye. They come here, as my mother did in 1947, looking for a new start in a new land. How dare anyone deny them the right to sing the anthem of their new country.

Much fewer people actually give a crap in NY since 40+% of the population are immigrants of some type.

Well, sort of. Racism IS ignorance, though not all ignorance is racism.

The kid tried to win on America's Got Talent to get money for an operation to help his brother hear.

Whatever blood he has in his veins and whatever color his skin, I'd take him any day over the ignorant morons who are criticizing him.

And yet he still has an amazing attitude:

As for Sebastien, he said the racist comments have not fazed him.
"For those that said something bad about me, I understand it's your opinion," said Sebastien to CNN. "I'm a proud American and live in a free country. It's not hurting me. It's just your opinion."
Sebastien has been singing since he was 5 but gained fame in 2012 after being on NBC's "America's Got Talent" for singing his mariachi ballads with hopes of winning to help his younger brother get surgery for his hearing problem.

Racism (as opposed to seeing cultural differences but not generalizing to specific people) is a SYMPTOM of ignorance.

If this is a problem and only "true Americans" are allowed to sing the national anthem, I guess we better start lining up American Indians for the ball games. Those are the only Americans that I can think of that would qualify.

Your gymnastics never cease to amaze me. This was racism pure and simple. This was not about 'pure Americans". It was about an assumption that a illegal alien/Mexican/not a white guy sang the Anthem. Read the comments posted in the link. They did not bother to think that this kid could be as American as their white racist butts were. His father even served in the Navy. No one questions that I am of German decent and here legally. Of course I am white so why would they. This kid was an American. Born in San Antonio. His Father served in the US Navy. This has nothing to do with his legal status. Unless we are going to question everyone's legal status, there is no reason to question this kids.

I know, I know.... everyone is picking on you ..... poor pitiful Larry. Whaaaaaaaaaaa. Perhaps you should stop asking to be picked on with insane comments like this.

Even if the kid were here illegally, it's not like he would have had much of a choice in the matter!

My Grandfather saw this in 1898

When my paternal Grandfather immigrated from County Cashel in 1890, he was told that he wasn't allowed to get off the boat in Philadelphia "because we have enough Irish". He was an educated man, an Engineer and a Teacher and NOT Catholic (he was Moravian). Made no difference at all. The next port of call was Wilmingtion, NC where he met and married my Grandmother, her family had gone west with Daniel Boone and settled the town of Cadiz, KY. My Mother met my Father in England during WW2 and came over as a Refugee War Bride by an Act of Congress.
As to discrimination by segregation, I clearly remember as a child in the 1960's seeing the "Colored Waiting Room" and "Colored Water Fountain" signs in the Railroad and Bus Station along with the "Colored Ticket Booth" by the outside stairs to the balcony at the Florida Theatre Jacksonville, FL.

Does anything come out of your mind but crap?

The Immigrants I know and hire (European, Latino, etc) actually do a far better job than the "Americans" that are available. They show up on time, dressed to work, work their butts off, clean their tools at the end of the day and don't mind ovetrtime if it is required. The "americans": that want jobs show up late, dressed in gangbanger gear, do 1/2 days work for a day's pay, drop their tools at 5:00 and complain when they have to do any ovetime (which they are well paid for...) Gimme "immigrants" any day because they have something to work for and to prove.

It's a lot more than 40% try 99% are immmigrants, only the Mohawk Ironworkers are true "Americans"!

I've never had the honor of attending the ceremonies, but I've known several people that came here and earned their citizenship. All of them were probably more proud to be Americans than most anyone I've ever known. At the same time I was always extremely impressed at their efforts and honor.

Maybe he wouldn't have a choice, but if he were here illegally he should not be allowed to do such things. In that case he and the criminal that brought him here should be sent back where they came from. We need law abiding people to come here, not those willing to break the law.

That said, you can if it to death. He's here legally, he's a good kid, and we're lucky to have him.

Uh, what?

The very definition of ignorant is lack of knowledge, education, or awareness.

Racists -- those who prejudge others based on their race -- lack knowledge and awareness, perhaps also education.

Racists are ignorant. No symptom involved, they meet the definition.

Ignorance leads to racism.
Infection leads to fever.
Broken toe leads to pain.

Racism is a symptom.
